Pinning Speech

Published

Well I've finally make it and our pinning/graduation ceremony is next Friday. As class president I have to make a short speech and am at a loss as to what to say. Our elected class speaker is going the route of summing of out experiences over the last two years so I can't very well do that. Any ideas or suggestions would be very very greatly appreciated!

Congrats! I am also the class president of my class. I will be giving the speech at graduation. My focus was talking about how the Dream that we all had and now have accomblished...I went on talking about believing in yoruself to reach that dream..etc. that was the path I took. I hope it helps.

I am also giving the speech at our pinning ceremony and wake up at night worrying about what to say.

I just started making some rough draft notes and I think I'll talk about how we got to where we are ... how we came in totally naive in the first semester, how we got better and better with each semester and how cohesive our class was this last semester. Or something like that. Or not.

Darn. I wish I could stay focused and write a speech instead of reading all nurses.com!! :chuckle

i cant help a ton since i have never been to a pinning ceremony nor do i know how much time you are looking to fill. since someone is doing what has happened up until this point (the past) the next step would be the focus on the future i guess. you could mention what you have to look forward to (and try not to focus on all the horror stories that you hear!) and perhaps even go into how each of us is a student for life because we should continue to learn and grow as we enter into the nursing field. if you have a small or close knit class you could focus on how important the friendships made are and how they will continue to be so after graduation... encourage your classmates to remember your class experiences and how having a friend to help you really is a value... even if it is just venting about that instructor or perhaps walking you through a hard clinical experience... and then how important those friendships will remain after you graduate and enter into the "real world of nursing"

i have always found that when writing a speech the opening is the hardest and if you do not get a good one it is really hard to keep the attention of the audience for the duration of the speech. for a sentimental event like a pinning you could try a good quote either from a poem or song and if you find a great one build your speech off it... i will see if i can dig something up for you.

congrats on your pinning... and good luck!

here are a couple of quotes that i came across by doing a quick search... you can look for more by doing searches for quotes motivational, inspirational, friendship, dreams, etc.

this is my personal favorite (and has been my email quote since i decided to go to nursing school)

excellence can be obtained if you....

care more than others think is wise,

risk more than others think is safe,

dream more than others think is practical,

and

expect more than others think is possible.--author unknown

Here's my thought. You could do a past-present-future talk, talking about your concept of nursing when you were trying to get in, then what it was during school, and what you hope it will be when you are all practicing. You could mention specific events during your pre-reqs with your pals, then some from school, funny, sad, interesting things, and then talk about what kind of nurse you all hope to be.

Would be interesting to everybody, and end up inspiring, hopefully.

Let us know what you decide to talk about....and

CONGRATS!!!!

Thank you so much for all your help! I found a quote that I really like but would like imput on it if you can:

When we were young and keenly felt our lacking we saw the others high above us and and thought "if we could reach them!". Now here we are up in childhood esther and we know a thing or two. Yet still we strive upward, as if for some exotic fruit hidden among tangled branches. Some would say, "be happy where you are!" but we are happy you see. Besides it's not a question of happiness its a question of human-ness". Whether on mountain path or open sea or printed page, we must always press on. We expect no miracles. After all, it is only ourselves we hope to find. --David Jacoby

I thought I could expand upon our journey and how we have come to find ourselves through our journey to nursdom

I welcome any thoughts opinions and ideas!

i think the quote is great... one thing that i would ask though is how long is your speech supposed to be? if you are not limited on time then it is a great quote and leaves you a little room to work with it. if you are limited for time i suggest you read the quote outlound several times (perhaps have someone time you) to see just how much of your speech it will take over. the last thing you want is to have a quote and then no speech (although it is easier to write! lol)

sounds like you have an idea of what you want to say about the quote... and it certainly has potential to be a great quote!

We did not have that in our class. Maybe because it was to large and at the same time as the other majors. Our nursing class had a tad over 250 students. Buying pins was opptional. Congrats though.
