PICU RN relocating from NY to Houston

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I am considering relocating to Houston with my family in the near future. I would want to live in northwest Houston as that is where my parents live. I don't really want to commute downtown. Are there children's hospitals in north Houston or within a reasonable commute of Klein or Spring? Also, I have 1+year of PICU experience in a level 1 trauma, will be more like 2 years by the time we move, will it be difficult to find a pediatric position? Peds or PICU is fine. Should I do a travel assignment first to see if I like the hospital and commute then hopefully sign with them if I do like it? Any and all advice is welcome. Thank you!

Both Memorial-Hermann Childrens & Texas Childrens Hospital are located in the Texas Medical Center (TMC).. both are part of the Childrens Miracle Network, etc. However, Texas Childrens also has a West campus in Katy. I believe that Memorial-Hermann Woodlands also has a PICU. "Reasonable Commute" is very subjective, so you'll have to investigate the specifics & make that determination for yourself. Actually, there are so many TMC employees in the Woodlands that they have their own commuter bus line between those two locations.

I strongly urge you to obtain you clinical specialty certification prior to relocating if possible. It will make your job search much easier. You may also want to time your relocation to avoid the 'jungle hot' summer months - LOL.

Thank you! Reasonable commute to me would be 30 minutes, so the Woodlands would be great! Now I just need to convince my husband. Hoping he wouldn't have too hard a time finding a job in finance down there. Appreciate the response!!

Texas Children's is opening a new hospital in The Woodlands as well

Memorial Hermann the Woodlands does NOT have a PICU only a NICU.
