I know that most of the hospitals in the larger cities have their own infusion/PICC teams, but what about the smaller hospitals in the rural areas? Do you use infusion agencies, or are all IR placed? Are the patient's sent to larger facilities for PICCs? Does your facility have a few trained nurses that place your PICCs? Or maybe your facility doesn't ever use PICCs?
If your facility does not place PICCs/midlines, what do you do with patients' on vanc or TPN?
Please take the time to respond to this as I am trying to find out if there is a need for independent PICC nurses in your area (especially in southern IN).
Thank you so much for responding,
Sherri

I work in a small hospital (85 beds) and we have approx 3 or 4 nurses that are allowed to place PICC's. If a pt needs a line stat we call the surgeon on call and he will place a central line or PICC. Also, if the nurse is not able to place a PICC the pt is sent to radiology where US is used and the radiologist places it. We have never had an issue where a pt has had to wait for an extended period of time for placement. To my knowledge we have never sent a pt out for placement.
I'm not sure, but I think the nurses took their class in Madison. If you are currently working in a hospital setting check with your NM. I'm sure if you are in a rural area that they would love to have someone like you!
