Phone interview scheduled for new grad position. Advice?

Published

I have been waiting for this day for a long time! After months of applying to various positions with a large hospital system, I finally get a call to schedule a phone interview for my "dream job". It's a new graduate position, so at least they are not expecting me to have a lot of nursing experience. Luckily it is for the unit which I did my senior internship, so I plan to highlight that experience as much as possible. I think my main detriment is that I went to school on the other side of the country, so they probably know nothing about the great reputation of my school, or of any of the hospitals where I completed my clinicals. Any students from this city who may have experience at their hospital definitely have an advantage... how could I spin that around to be more positive for me?

I wouldn't be so worried about it, except that I just had a really bad interview situation a couple weeks ago that really discouraged me. It was a group interview (with 15 applicants in the same room answering typical behavioral interview questions). It was very hard to "stand out" in the crowd, and although I was probably one of the most qualified on paper for the position, I didn't get a call back for that one.

On the flip side, I had a GREAT interview for a homecare position yesterday, so I'm hoping I can ride that confidence out. I plan to review my journal I kept during my internship so I have specific examples in my head, and I will have a list of questions for the interviewer (who is a recruiter not a manager). I will have a thank you note ready to send out postal mail afterwards.

Does anyone have a good link to a list of questions I should be prepared for? I did a lot of research on these forums already, which has helped a lot. Any more advice you can offer (or at least positive vibes!) would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks much! :)

I hope your in-person interview went well! Mine is tomorrow... big day! I'm hoping that my enthusiasm for the position (this is my top choice hospital and unit) will shine through and give me confidence and poise. Wish me luck!

In-person interview went as well as it could have! I'm the last of 3 to be interviewed so I should hear back early next week... fingers crossed!

That's great. I still haven't heard back.I am getting worried but the HR lady is giving me the impression I am good. The position hasnt been filled yet so that is good but I was supposed to hear back by this week regardless and the lady that did my interview is supposed to be going on vacation today. So I don't know what to think. So nerve wracking. Anyway. Keep us updated, fingers crossed.

The waiting is the hardest part. :uhoh3: I was supposed to hear back after the phone interview in "one to one and a half weeks" but I didn't hear until over 2 weeks later. I called the HR lady and left a message at day 10, so maybe you can try calling on Friday afternoon since they promised you'd hear back this week. However, the day I heard back was the first day I had told myself to stop worrying about it because there wasn't anything else I can do! ;)

Try to stay busy... that's what I'm going to do. Keep other job prospects in the works. Things will turn out for the best!!

I finally got a call back. I am in Oregon on vacation and she called my house in CO and left a message. She told me to call her back (said nothing if I got the job or not) but of course it was after business hours when I got the message. So I call back and her voicemail says she is out of the office until tomorrow afternoon. This seriously would be my luck lol

I got beat out by an internal candidate, a tech who probably had lots of the staff pushing for him/her to get it. Here's the email I got:

--------------------------------------------

Thank you for taking the time to interview for the ED Resident RN position. I wanted to let you know that we have ultimately selected an internal candidate who has worked as a tech in our ED for this position. However, [the hiring manager] wanted me to stress to you that you interviewed extremely well for this position and it was a very hard decision (which is the reason for the delay in making a decision). He also wanted to say that he thinks you will do excellent wherever you end up – and truly wishes he had another position open.

I also want to encourage you to continue checking our website for other resident positions. If I can answer any questions for you, don’t hesitate to contact me.

--------------------------------------------

:crying2: A huge disappointment, since it all was out of my control. I guess the positive side is that I now have a contact at this hospital system so I can hopefully do some networking.

I'm sorry. That is a bummer but seemed like you did all the right things. Keep trying!!!
