Phasing out LPN's?

I have heard that many states want to or are phasing out LPN's and just using RN's? Do you think there is truth to this or just hear say? There are not as many LPN schools as RN, however there are still some? Just wondering what you guys think? I know LPN's are used mainly in LTC places, do you really think they are phasing them all out?:p

It's a popular rumor. Potential LPNs may be concerned that they're "wasting" their time going to LPN school.

I've heard this rumor a lot myself, especiallly over the past year during LPN school from other nurses.

Why on earth not? I do understand the last item because LVNs often cannot do the initial assessment in acute care. However, not being allowed to call a doctor or receive an order just seems ridiculous. What state are you in?

That said - I don't feel phased out...

I don't think we have too many LPN's at my hospital anymore. We have one on our floor that now works as a CNA, but I am not sure how that came about. But as an LPN, they were not allowed to call doctors or take orders, among other things. The RN had to do that and their patient load was just a little bit heavier because of it.

People been saying that for years - Not going to happen

a few reasons

From a cost analysis prespective, its more economical to have LPN/LVN's in "reduced acuity" patients departments (LTC, ED, Nursery)

LPN's are a vital component to outpatient care and same day patient care centers

LPN's are needed in acute care - in my opinion we NEED to return to TEAM nursing again - Med/Surg needs all the help we can get - Its unrealistic to have an RN with 10 patients with an aide. LPN's would help with my job so much if they would phase them back into the med/surg depts
