we are required to make pharmacology cards for our OB rotation. We only have two more days left in this rotation and our cards are due tommorow. I was wondering if anyone could help me decifer what should and shouldn't be on these cards and where I could possibly find a template for microsoft word to help me with this?

I don't have a template, but ours had to look like this:
Generic name (Trade name)
Pharmologic class:
Theraputic class:
Indications:
Method of action:
Normal or safe dosage:
Acceptable routes:
Interactions:
Administration instructions:
Adverse effects:
Nursing interventions:
Hope that helps. Good luck on your finals!!

wow grace, you guys had to put a lot on your cards!
i didn't put that much on mine. (of course we had to look up all prn's too, and working on orthopedic, there were a lot of prn's, so i had to keep mine simple - i'd never sleep!) i just put enough to remind myself - and anything that may be a high alert/things to look for. the way i see it, our cards are a reference resource. if i need full information, there are drug guides on the floor!
i kept an "other" line for all kinds of things - this is where i put nursing interventions, lab info.. my instructors ask a lot of "what labs should you be following with this drug", so i kinda notated that on there too - just in case. any major drug interactions i would notate here. (i try to review pt's drugs and prn's before-hand to see what may cause probs, because some drugs interact with way too much to write!) i also put important teaching things on some of them. (eg: my warfarin/coumadin card i marked teach pt about limiting vit k foods, & brushing teeth w/soft toothbrush).
here is an example of one i did:
name of drug: morphine
class: opoid analgesics (sched ii)
action: binds to opiate receptors in cns, causes decrease in severity of pain.
side effects: confusion, sedation, hypotension, constipation
other: assess loc, bp, pulse & resp. if resp
on the back, i would tape a little note with the date and the dosage/route.. this way i can reuse the cards.
You know, I just realized you might have a lot of writing to do! You might be better running out and buying a copy of Davis' Drug Guide for Nurses - they have a CD in there that allows you to look up 300 of the most common drugs, and print your own cards from it.... if your teacher allows you to do that, then by all means, just type the name in and hit print!!By golly, that'll get them done quickly so you can relax a bit at the end of the semester!! :rotfl:
