Pharmacology & Medical Surgical Nursing

Published

I am about to begin Pharmacology and Medical Surgical Nursing. I finished the first session of nursing school , Fundamentals, Health Assessment,Dosage ,and etc. I want to be well prepared for what's to come with my new upcoming classes. What should I expect? How does acute care clinicals vary from long term care? Does the testing get harder? Is med/surg more interesting because fundamentals was booring but still challenging and dreadful

Bump for replies. :-) interested to hear what people say on this topic

I don't know about your school but my 2nd semester we had 3-5 week rotations (geriatrics, renal, OB) and pharmacology. I will say that pharmacology kicked my ass! I really was doubtful that I would pass the class so I ended up buying different optional books which helped. As for clinicals...aside from OB, they were definitely more involved. Most of my patients did not have chronic conditions. Hopefully this helps you a little!

med-surg is more interesting because you will be introduced to all sorts of diseases and conditions. Once you learn their normal progression you will encounter patients who do not follow the textbook. You will learn to think on your feet. Don't look too far ahead. You need to concentrate on what is required of you now and let the future take care of itself. Good luck!
