Pharm Flash Cards

Published

Hi everyone,

I just finished my first semester of Nursing school. In the Fall, I will have to face Pharmacology and Clinical Nursing I. The class ahead of us told us how incredibly difficult Pharmacology is. Therefore, I would like to use my summer to study ahead and get familiar with the material. I would like to get a flash card set since I study best that way. However, I did some research and the reviews of most of the flash card sets, mentioned that they aren't going into enough detail :( So, I was wondering if anyone knows a flash card set that really helped with the difficult material in Pharmacology? Any suggestions are appreciated!

The best flash cards were the ones I made myself. Less expensive, too :)

Get a blank piece of paper and write in the topics you will need to know (e.g. Generic/Trade Name, Indications, Adverse Effects, Routes of Administration, Dosaging, Contraindications, Drug-Drug and/or Drug/Food interactions and a big section for Nursing Implications)

Make copies of this sheet and keep them in a 3-ring binder. As you study a drug, fill out the information on the sheet. Voilà! Not only is it less expensive, you end up retaining the information better because you are actively preparing the sheet. Not just reading (rote memorization) from a pre-printed card. If you need any help, let me know. I can e-mail you a blank copy of the sheet I used in my Pharm class.

I would also highly recommend if your school offers Supplemental Instruction (aka tutoring) for Pharm, take advantage of this! I went once a week and it made all the difference between a B and an A. I was able to get a solid A in Pharm and it was not an easy task! Ben was wonderful and had so many tips on remembering how a drug is metabolized, which systems it affects, etc.

If your Pharm class also has a math component for dosage calculations, I will put in my standard plug for "Math Attack: Winning the Pharmacology Math Battle" by Karen Champion. She makes it so easy to understand and gives you 4 different methods for calculating your answers. You simply choose the method that works best for you or fits the parameters of the question. I loved this book!

Greetings.

Attached are 12 Word documents which I made when I took pharmacology. All the information was based on the ATI study guide since that constituted the final exam in our class.

They are formatted as 3x5 cards and were printed on individual 3x5 cards.

Have at 'em if you think they'll help... they certainly worked for me.

Again, they are entirely my own creation based on the information out of the ATI book. I make no promises as to their accuracy (though I rocked pharm so they couldn't be too bad).

Feedback is welcome.
