PGH feedback

Anyone here worked at PGH before? Looks like they're hiring. While waiting out the retrogression, might as well, right?

@thorabeech

they did... I was informed by the guy who handed the application for NPE and 3 pips who took their exam last month... they however were not big on details... :crying2:

From what I've gathered, there are 33 multiple choice questions... some questions are awarded 2 points... total=50

I think the change has to do with the low passing rate.

thank you though :redpinkhe

APCN EXAM & whatnots :nurse:

Hi, y'all!

By this time- the last batch of the examinees have taken their exam. I took mine around 8:30. I'd just like to give my two cents about APCN exam so that the future takers would have an idea of what to expect. This forum has been of great help to me and in turn I'd like to do the same.

So... this was the APCN exam that I took.

1. It's a 50 item exam.

2. The time allotted for it was 45 minutes

3. It was 45-item multiple choice and 5-item computation

4. Subjects that were asked: MSN! no MCN, CHN... nada

5. The computation involved dosage calculation. Using calculator was allowed. (I didn't bring one unfortunately... but some did- so... kudos to them for thinking about it :p). Anywho... we where given a situation... I think the client has CHF and we were to compute about the correct dose of lanoxin (not sure...) to be given stat, q4, q12, q12 there on after.

(It was simple dosage calculation but it would have save time a bit if you have a calculator. May next time they'll give IV computations. And Lord knows I have an allergic reaction to division... hehe And... uhm... ask the proctors first before you bring them out)

6. ... there was one about Pedia (the question was like... you've found a child who couldn't identify himself... what would you do sorta thing :))

7. How the question were phrased... uhm they where easy to read (Lord knows some NCLEX questions are just migraine inducing that I have to translate them in tagalog just to fully grasp what it was asking). But I found them a bit tricky. That or my 1 year hiatus from all things nursing has finally taken its toll. hehe.

So the questions were fairly straight-forward. Just read them carefully. I believed I was lulled into a false sense of security... hehe that or I'm over analyzing the question again. I'm a bit OC that way. :)

8. Here is an example of a 'who-would-have-thought-they'd-asked-this' question

-Prothrombin is a ______ protein blah blah produced by the _______ :D

a. alpha, liver b. alpha, kidney c. beta, liver d. beta, kidney

-Fi02 on mechanical ventilation...

9. Medical Conditions/ Procedures that were mentioned... CVA, Renal Failure, MI, DI, oh gee... I'm having a hard time wracking my brain... pharmacology (ASA, epinephrine, mannitol), DM, spinal injury, Px on Mechanical Ventilator, ER,...

10. ECG (1)... uhm... an ECG strip was shown and we were asked to identify what type of arrhythmia.

Is it too much info? Sorry if I've over-shared. :lol2: I guess I chatter and drone a bit when I'm anxious..

Oh well... hope it helps.

hi Mrs.NorthmanRN

if u dont mind, i just want to ask about the dosage calculation, is it computed differently as stat? q4?q12? and counted as 1 point each? too confused about it..:)

ei jdyumi,

As what suswot has quoted: "focus on FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING. not on MS, pedia, chn, etc...the exam is really BASIC but these basic stuffs were usually the one overlooked by nurses." These are the items that i have retained in mind after taking the npe: temp conversion (Celsius to Fahrenheit), examples of biohazards, what does OU stand for, what is sullivan's theory, first line of defense, glasgow coma scale, warning signs of cancer, characteristics of oxygen...i think thats all i can remember for now. Its true that the exam is really basic. Just review the basics and you're good to go. Also consider to review on the insulin stuff, basic info in OR and other topics which you think possible to come out. I hope I was able to help you with these information. Good luck in your exam. You still have a lot of time to refresh your stored knowledge. God bless us all. :D

Hi, I think the structure of the test was totally changed. It wasn't like any NCLEX type exam that makes people dizzy by just reading the question. They're right when they said that it's all about Fundamentals of Nursing, although there are some questions about pedia, MS & Maternal Nursing but there were very few. Read whatever you can cover until your exam date. You still have a lot of time to prepare.

PS:

btw, like you I am also a 2008 Board Passer but I never worked in a hospital. :D I just had my license renewed last January without any clear vision about my direction. Don't think too much, just read, read & read...after all taking your chance in PGH is all worth it.

That's nice to know mikeru22...:D but i think we took the exam on different dates. I guess u took yours last jan 20, since you mentioned "feb 20 is nearer than ever." :D While for me, i was scheduled last jan 27. Lets hope for the best and pray that God will allow...:D

Two thumbs up to that!

Hi, I want to apply at PGH next week, but I just want to ask if they need the original documents as opposed to photocopies.

Specializes in Acute Care, Trauma, Critical Care, Psych.

They would require you to submit the original documents once you pass the Nurse 1 exam.

Hello i just want to ask how long would it take after submitting all the requirements needed? :) i passed last Feb 6 and i also want to know if there are deadlines for submission 'cause im planning to submit it after my 4mos. training .. thank you :)

and also, i've read that they need the original copies of the documents, are they going to return it or not?? THANK YOU so much .. i'm hoping for response .. God bless you all :)

Are they going to return it or not? :)
