I have been traveling for 3 years. I have paid a non-refundable pet deposit of about 300.per assignment/apt. The last two assignments I have seen surcharge of about 250.-300. refundable pet fee. I understand why the apt complex need protection against damage but why the extra fee? Are other travelers seeing this? It just my company ? How does it work in other companies?

I'm on my first assignment in Amarillo, Texas. Before I got here, I looked on the website for the apartment complex that I would be staying. For regular tenants, they charge $300 for a dog, and $600 for cats. I was astounded. Cats don't make that much damage to an apartment, and if they do, it's to the owner's furniture. Can't see why the deposit is so high. I've been here since Dec 14, and nobody has asked me for any deposit. I know that I've researched some travel company websites, and there are some companies/apt complexes that do charge the traveler. What company are you with?

The deposit varies depending on what apartment complex you are staying with- it usually has nothing to do with your company. The deposit is sometimes more for a cat because cats tend to have more "accidents" on the carpet, and cat pee is VERY stinky and it's hard to get rid of the smell. Also, cats that aren't declawed sometimes scratch on carpet, walls, etc....
Good point. I am traveling with my cat, and traveling is new to both of us. When I first got here, I kept smelling this weird smell, something I had never smelled before. It was only when I was in bed. I first thought that my cat had an accident (bm), because it smelled more like that, than urine. But I couldn't find anything . Yesterday, I bought some Febreeze, and went to spray the mattress, and guess what I found: a very large urine stain. Not sure why she would of jumped onto the bed, just to urinate, instead of the floor (she had also urinated on the kitchen floor). So hopefully, I won't get charged for this, and hopefully, she won't do it again, when I go to my next assignment.

We were charged 500 pet deposit by the travel company. However we spoke to various neighbors and they said they never put any deposit down. So we went to the office and sure enough they dont require any Pet deposit. We promptly called out recruiter and she said it is common policy with the housing department to charge the fee. Were told that it goes into a large pool of money so when they have an occurence they just pull from the pool of cash. I told them like H%%% they do and I demanded our money back which they refunded immeditely.
