Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Good after noon. I am currently enrolled at Laguardia Community College & I'm having a few issues. My first major issue is that I am currently trying to change my major to nursing but they won't let me bc I don't have enough grades? My second issue is that I am currently failing my PSYCH101, I still have hope for a C but if not total FAILURE. I spoke to an advisor at my school & she basically told me that my chances will be slim to none for getting into the program due to the C or failing grade in my PSYCH class. So now what do I do? I considered changing my school because I don't want to continue there and at the endof the day I won't be let it due to my grade for PSYCH. So now that I cant change my major to nursing nor receive a grade higher then a C it's like what do I do? Shouldi consider changing my schooling? Private or community? Any help, opinions, advice please!i considered going to a private school called monroe college in the Bronx the tuition for 3 semesters is 21,000! What about bmcc or city tech?

I attended BMCC back in 2003 and I remember they required English, Psychology and A&P1 as the 3 main course to major/apply to their nursing program and had to get no less then a B+ (I don't know if they changed it); and this is something new that they implemented which is the Hesi 2A. I remember a lot of favortism toward a particular race because the head of the nursing department was from that same background. I was such a mess that I the students applied to NYU becasue they had a better shot of getting in since their gpa's where very good.

LCC is also competive, basically all the CUNY schools are VERY hard to get into; and their is a lot of politics that goes with it. Monroe in the Bronx is expensive, but they also require certain things and maybe you may have a chance. I went to their open house and it was just ridiculous of their waiting-list. If you haven't taken and plan to take your prenursing requirment make sure you do absolutly well in them because that is 50% of your acceptance into the program along with the their other requriements. Just try to do good; and apply to any program of your choice because you never know what may happen. Good Luck.

Hello,

I do not have any advice about the particular schools you have listed.

Declaring your major at this point is not urgently important. You have to enter an actual nursing program and not just declare your major while you pursue your general education requirements.

Does your current school have a policy on repeating classes? You may be able to repeat psych 101 and earn a better grade.

Even if you do leave this school, nursing schools often (if not always) require transcripts from all schools you have attended. It is very common for students to omit unfavorable transcripts but, technically, this is academic dishonesty and may be grounds for expulsion.

I also recommend asking yourself why you want to move to a different school. Do you have other issues with this school? If you did not have your current grade in psych, would you stay? It sucks to be in a place where there is confusion and disappointment. However, consider that transferring may not be the solution and that there are ways for you to pursue success where you are.

Well I read that you have to have permission to retake it and they will calculate them both into the gpa

And bmcc Pre req are amp 1 , eng 101, psych 100, mat 104 but I heard bmcc has a forgiveness for failing classes

Well I read that you have to have permission to retake it and they will calculate them both into the gpa

You can achieve a strong GPA with a C and an A in psych 101, especially if you have not taken a lot of classes. Psych 101 is 3 units, right? If you do well in your other general education classes and nursing classes, you could have a very strong record that drowns out any C's.

I was thinking on asking to retake it and strive as Haidas I can for an A & also for the Other Pre req.

As hard as I can *

I also wouldn't consider leaving he school if it wasn't for the discouragement from my advisor. It truly Madame upset for her to even say what she did. My brother graduated from LAGCC With an associates in computer science. I'm also worried that if I stay there at the end it may take me years to get accepted into the program. Then I Ali though maybe if I went to a priv school I may have more of anchancevto get in in the end

Hello Perspective Student,

Don't give up your dream about being a nurse. The first thing you should do is give some thought as to why you are not being successful in your psych class. Second, if Monroe College is a school that you are considering why don't you come to an information session, offered every Tuesday at 12noon and 5:30pm for all the RIGHT information. The number to call to make an appointment is 646-393-8374. Also, when you consider the cost of higher education, you must think about this as an investment in your future. Here at Monroe we have the staff and the resources to address all of your concerns.

I look forward to seeing you at an information session.
