Personal Statement for RN Residency Program

Hi Everyone!

I'm applying to a new grad program soon and would like some advice on my personal statement.

Why do you believe completing a nurse residency program will be beneficial to your development as a professional nurse?

As a new nurse, I believe completing the nurse residency program will set me up for success in my independent practice. The 18 week residency program is a period of transition in which I will be repeatedly exposed to clinical situations with a more experienced nurse to call upon for advice and consultation. This program will help me move from the academic setting to the practice environment, gaining knowledge and forming relationships that will serve me throughout my career. I believe this experience will ease my transition from nursing school and assist in continuing to build my confidence and competence as a professional nurse. Not only will I build upon my critical thinking skills during this time, but I will be able to learn how to pull it all together in a clinical scenario.

The nurse residency program will assist me in refining my critical thinking and ability to perform detailed physical assessment, interpret lab data, and determine when and why to contact the provider. This program will also be beneficial to me by improving my time management skills and ability to prioritize, learning how to identify and function in an emergency, improving conflict resolution skills, understanding how to safely delegate, and generally improving my clinical proficiency. It will be invaluable to my career to start off with a preceptor who will guide me through all these essential nursing roles.

The Versant Program is designed to strengthen my learning experiences during the first few months of my career so that I can cultivate essential nursing function needed for excellent nursing practice. I believe your investment in my learning will strengthen the vital skills needed for exceptional nursing care that will inevitably benefit my nursing ability and career.
