Please review this very rough draft of my personal statement for FNP admission and thanks in advance for any pointers. I am at a lose because it has been years since I have been in school and I am clueless as what my statement needs to include. I grew up in a rural Appalachian community in _______ near the ________ county line. My upbringing in a large farm family nurtured my core values and shaped me into a person who is loyal, compassionate, and honest with a strong attachment to her family and community. It also taught me the importance of hard work and the perseverance in pursuit of one's desired vision. This is why I want to become a nurse practitioner which is my dream career that has a great meaning and value to me. I was delivered at home by a nurse mid-wife, as a child and into my teenage years Ivolunteered at her healthcare center, and later when I became a nurse I was able to work alone beside her to provide care to the people of my community. It was after this close mentorship when I realized that I loved being a nurse, butthat I needed to pursue and advanced practice nursing degree in order toprovide the most holistic care to the people in the community I love.
An advanced degree will increase my overall understanding of the science of nursing and provide an opportunity to research rural nursing issues as a means of improving the health of the at-risk rural populations that I grew up in. Advanced nursing will give me the professional latitude to diagnose, prescribe, and mange the overall care of apatient including emphasis on prevention and education throughout the patient's lifespan. Providing this advanced care in my hometown will allow me to develop close knit bonds with my patients and their families, and to be able to give back to the community that has given so much to me. This will be an exciting opportunity to expand my knowledge base and train in the growing field of advanced practice nursing. My dream is to reestablish the outreach rural healthcare clinic that my mentor started, and provide a much needed service tothe people in the mountains and hollows of Appalachia . This community as awhole still holds steadfast to beliefs of times that have long past. They feel that their health care needs are still very much private and as such are much easier to address in their home community. I have a genuine interest in learning how to become a knowledgeable provider of care for patients from one end of the lifespan to the other. I will be able to accomplish more by holding an advance practice degree because I will be able to forester bonds with the people from my childhood, and realize the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
