Please review this very rough draft of my personal statement for FNP admission and thanks in advance for any pointers. I am at a lose because it has been years since I have been in school and I am clueless as what my statement needs to include. I grew up in a rural Appalachian community in _______ near the ________ county line. My upbringing in a large farm family nurtured my core values and shaped me into a person who is loyal, compassionate, and honest with a strong attachment to her family and community. It also taught me the importance of hard work and the perseverance in pursuit of one's desired vision. This is why I want to become a nurse practitioner which is my dream career that has a great meaning and value to me. I was delivered at home by a nurse mid-wife, as a child and into my teenage years Ivolunteered at her healthcare center, and later when I became a nurse I was able to work alone beside her to provide care to the people of my community. It was after this close mentorship when I realized that I loved being a nurse, butthat I needed to pursue and advanced practice nursing degree in order toprovide the most holistic care to the people in the community I love.

An advanced degree will increase my overall understanding of the science of nursing and provide an opportunity to research rural nursing issues as a means of improving the health of the at-risk rural populations that I grew up in. Advanced nursing will give me the professional latitude to diagnose, prescribe, and mange the overall care of apatient including emphasis on prevention and education throughout the patient's lifespan. Providing this advanced care in my hometown will allow me to develop close knit bonds with my patients and their families, and to be able to give back to the community that has given so much to me. This will be an exciting opportunity to expand my knowledge base and train in the growing field of advanced practice nursing. My dream is to reestablish the outreach rural healthcare clinic that my mentor started, and provide a much needed service tothe people in the mountains and hollows of Appalachia . This community as awhole still holds steadfast to beliefs of times that have long past. They feel that their health care needs are still very much private and as such are much easier to address in their home community. I have a genuine interest in learning how to become a knowledgeable provider of care for patients from one end of the lifespan to the other. I will be able to accomplish more by holding an advance practice degree because I will be able to forester bonds with the people from my childhood, and realize the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.

Your statement needs to include your passion for serving as an FNP (which yours definitely does)!! Yours has a lot of great things going for it including desire to serve the community in Appalachia. I can see some spelling/grammar things here. Easy fixes.

I grew up in a rural Appalachian community in _______ near the ________ county line. My upbringing in a large farm family nurtured me and shaped my core values: loyalty, compassion, and honesty. It instilled in me a strong attachment to my family and community. It also taught me the importance of hard work and the perseverance in pursuit of my desired vision.

My desire to become a nurse practitioner started early. As a child and into my teenage years I volunteered at a healthcare center run by the nurse midwife who delivered me at home. Later, when I became a nurse, I was able to work alone beside her to provide care to the people of my community. During this close mentorship I realized that while I loved being a nurse, I needed to pursue an advanced practice nursing degree in order to provide needed holistic care to the people in the community I love.

An advanced degree will increase my overall understanding of the science of nursing. It will also provide an opportunity to research rural nursing issues and improve the health of the at-risk rural population in which I grew up. Training as a nurse practitioner will give me the professional latitude to diagnose, prescribe, and manage the overall care of patients including needed emphasis on prevention and education throughout the lifespan. Providing this advanced care in my hometown will allow me to build on already close-knit bonds with my patients and their families, and to give back to the community that has given so much to me. This will be an exciting opportunity to expand my knowledge base and train in the growing field of advanced practice nursing.

My dream is to reestablish the outreach rural healthcare clinic that my mentor, the midwife, started, and provide a much needed service to the people in the mountains and hollows of Appalachia . This community as a whole still holds steadfast to beliefs of times that have long past. They feel that their health care needs are still very much private and as such are much easier to address in their home community. I have a genuine interest in becoming a more knowledgeable provider of care for patients from one end of the lifespan to the other. As a nurse practitioner, I will be able to accomplish more because I will be able to foster bonds with the people from my childhood, serve their primary healthcare needs in a culturally sensitive manner, and realize the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.

I clarified a few areas but what you wrote is really good. Best wishes to you.

Nice, practicing in the same rural community that you grew up in, you are not an outsider - you are able to relate to their needs and understand the barriers that they face in achieving optiumal health. With this relationship, you are able to gain their trust and be able to meet their health care needs. That is awesome of you to be willing to give back, where you could have gone somewhere else and live a more lavish lifestyle and make more money. Your heart is in the right place. Hope you get in. I liked the statement as well.

When I interviewed for my NP program, the director told me she found it helpful when students said something in their personal statement about why they were choosing *that* school. Is there something about your school choice that makes you want to go there? Don't want to push you on this too far, because I think your statement explains well why you want to become an FNP.
