Perineal Prep Solutions?

Published

There was a similar post on this years ago, but after an exhaustive lit search, I'm coming to you guys. For the perineal prep immediately before SVD, what does your facility use? Betadine? Baby shampoo? Sterile water? Do you even do a prep? L&D nurses seem to agree that it's ridiculous, as the lady parts is far from sterile, and any sort of scrub must be rendered null and void by delivery. So what do you use? And do you know why you use it?

i interned on a large labor and delivery unit and we the nurses only did pericare if the patient had an odor, or if they had a lot of secretions from the lady parts and it was getting messy. We used johnsons baby shampoo for the pericare if we did it. The doctors used betadine if they were going to do an episiotomy.

One doctor likes ultradex scrub and rinse with sterile water or saline. BUT if we clean it ourselves with a little water and it looks clean when they come to deliver they don't want to wash it again. The other doctor doesn't prep at all. We think prepping is ridiculous..us nurses.

The last hospital I worked at which was a teaching hospital, nothing to prep. The hospital I'm currently working at - Casteel soap and warm water.
