Per diem requirements

Published

I've noticed in the past few years that employers treat per diem staff like part time workers. The days of working only when you want to and getting more pay because you don't get benefits is over.

What is required of per diems? If they take call, wtime.what is compensation for visits?

Per diem at my employer are required to work ever third weekend (with call,) one winter and one summer holiday (may include call.) Same as fulltime staff. Visit pay while on call.

Mileage only for lab drop off, running the INR machine or supplies to someone. No additional pay for anything related to a visit.

Hourly rate for office time.

1 weekend a month which can be 2 Saturdays or 2 Sundays, the equivalent of 5 visits minimum (or 2 SOC, 1 visit) on those required days, no call.

1 Summer holiday, 1 Winter holiday.

If I choose to work an additional Saturday, I can choose to do 1 SOC and that's it. The 5 visit equivalent is only for my required weekend.

No mileage.

I don't work in home care but I do agree the requirements are kinda stiff. I work in an ER I need 72 hrs every 6 weeks (1 12 a week or however I want to break it up) 1 summer and 1 winter holiday. I was thinking more 1 shift a month... And pick up here and there where I can.

That's all I am required to work, total.

So, I can technically work 2 days a month and keep my finger in the pie, but what is the point of that? I took this job to make $$$!

At the hospital I needed 2 shifts per month minimum to keep PD status.

I know what you mean. I prefer less requirements of per diem because I still have another job and school. But I want to keep my foot in the door so I have more options when I graduate.

Also my Perdiem job I get way more experience than at my other job but my other job pays more and pays for school. I feel like I sold my soul to the devil !

Hahhahhaa. That's exactly why I left my hospital job after 20 years. They owned me.

I was there 10 hours a day at a breakneck pace, doing scheduling, fielding sick calls, acting as practice manager and going to school. I wanted to jump off a building.

Now I work 2 jobs. LESS pay for sure, but my schedule is so much more flexible, and I'm less insane.

Yea I'd much rather make less and be happy than make more and be miserable. I've actually contemplated breaking the tuition assistance contract because of how unhappy I am. Or cancel it so I can start serving back my 2 years.

On the weekend, we take 3 SOC if we are not on call and if there's more to take, they shovel it. If there is a case over the points they assign, which can be as many as 8 or 9, they assign it to the call person. Someone decided per diems don't have to take call on week nights. Thank God, I used to have to do that too. I do four+ points five days a week. They get frustrated when I say I can't do more than 4 on any single day. I feel like saying, " This is what I am doing for you today and it's more than I have to. You're Welcome."I just told the scheduler I will not be working on Wednesdays. I can take 5 points when I do work and make the same money.
