People who trivialize nursing

Published

This is my first post ever! So glad to be a part of this community. So, I'll get right to it. I was out having dinner last night with my husband's family and I was telling them all about how so many people in my program have failed out this past week after our last exam before clinincal. (I'm in Fundamentals) My brother-in-law then says "It's not that hard is it?" Referring to the nursing program. I was definitely taken aback a little and responded by saying, "I don't think it is because I study like my life depends on it." Now I'm mad at myself for not putting him in his place by telling him it is really hard at times and to please not trivialize what I'm doing. (He's an artist by the way, not to say that can't be difficult but c'mon, compared to nursing!) I guess this is my first taste of the disrespect nurses and future nurses get all the time. Now, I really know how it feels and I'm so annoyed by all the things I didn't say to him, that I'm having trouble studying. I know it sounds stupid but his comments really ticked me off, especially since I know he's thinking to himself, "well it's not like you're in med school." Watching friends of mine pack their things with tears in their eyes last week because they failed the class just makes me want to call him and scream in his face because they were all intelligent people. I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences and what you did to get over it. I know I'll get over it in a few days but for now I'm still stewing:devil:

Anytime someone degrades nurses, I tell them, "You could not do my job for one hour. You could not pass the boards to take the test to qualify for my job. You could not get through the schooling to do my job. Hell, you could not get through the freaking prerequisites to get into school. Until you can do any of that, then you can talk crap about nurses."

Thanks guys, the initial shock is finally starting to wear off. I'm like whatever who cares what he thinks. I think ” hard” is such a relative term. If you study hard enough at anything you can do anything you want. That's what I was trying to convey. Oh well, back to studying!
