I am trying to find out the likelihood of obtaining an ICU position at any of the Pensacola hospitals as a new grad. I have the chance to do my internship there over the Summer to get my foot in the door, but I don't want to do it there if it's unrealistic to expect a job out of it. I'll be a BSN nurse, great work ethic, etc.

I'm a new grad, moved away from where I graduated and haven't found a job yet. My problem mostly being that I have not been able to network down here or have my foot in any doors because I didn't do clinicals here nor did I work at any of these hospitals. If you have the chance to intern at a hospital that you want to work at after graduation, do it! There certainly is never a guarantee that they'll hire you afterwards, but you'll have your foot in the door and they'll know your work ethic and more about you then just what is on your resume. I think it's a great opportunity to network and meet people so that you'll have a greater chance of landing a job there once you graduate! Good luck!
Thank you! Do you have any idea why you haven't had any luck? It seems there are so many jobs on the hospitals' websites...I thought too having a BSN nurse applying would give us a leg up since there aren't too many there (at least that's what I've been told by people)
The issue I'm finding is that in Charleston it's extremely competitive. There are three nursing schools (mainly ADN programs) all in the charleston area. Although I have a BSN, most hospitals will take their own graduates over an "outsider". The one teaching hospital that I'd love to work at has a new grad residency program. I've been told that for every new grad position available, there are 100-200 applications received, talk about competition! I've had one interview there two weeks ago and haven't heard back yet. Still have five applications that are in progress so haven't lost all hope. I've been told by a lot of locals that hospitals down here don't like to hire outside graduates. Which makes sense because myself and several other girls I know with their BSN's all from outside universities have yet to find jobs here. It sucks that's why I say if you have the opportunity to intern at a hospital you wanna work at, the chances are greater for you to get a job after graduation!
wait a sec, so you are not in Pensacola?
No I was just offering advice from my own experience. Sorry I didn't mean to make it sound like I was speaking about Pensacola in my first response, I was just speaking in general!

I am in the Pensacola area, been a nurse for 7 yrs. Do the internship...they do take the advice from the associates you will be working with, if you are a good fit, and have great potential in becoming a great ICU nurse. However, it is not a guarantee as said earlier. At our facility, we tend to look only for experienced nurses in critical care areas, BUT when associates recommend someone we do interview, and if we feel they are a good fit, we hire.
Great information, thank you! I did submit a request to do my internship in Pensacola. I'm really excited!
