My focus is Chinese Herbal medicine, so please take my reply in that context.
For Chinese herbs, two books are used as the standards in the field:
Chinese Medical Herbology and Pharmacology ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0974063509/qid=1133389452/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/002-8130640-6513623?s=books&v=glance&n=283155 )
and
Chinese Herbal Materia Medica 3rd Edition ( http:// http://www.bastyr.edu/bookstore/order/books.asp?item={B0EC3A66-9C25-4ECB-875C-4C396B851810}&catid=18 )
For Western botanical medicine, there are a few choices. Probably the most anticipated book in the field is the new edition of the Textbook of Natural Medicine.

There is a few more options but I am drawing a blank right now. I'll check on Friday at my school's bookstore.

Have you heard about a new PDR with herbs in it that is coming out? Wonder who was consulted for input? Looking forward to seeing it. Linda
