Hello Everyone....

I haven't been on the board in a while. In my absence, I've gotten orders for my next duty station...Guam. I don't PCS until May 2009, but at least I know where I'm going now. It was either Guam, Lemore, or 29 Palms. I think I picked the best of the worst. :D

Guam has a really great ER...lots of traumas....so that's awesome.

Now I'm trying to choose between military housing or civilian housing. Since I'm married I get a 2 bedroom. I've been told during the storms the power stays out for a shorter amt of time in military housing.

I would love to hear from anyone who has been to Guam and about thier experiences.

A friend of mine just moved to Guam. I can send you her email if you want to ask her questions. They live on base and basically said they love it. Here is a little excerpt from what she emailed me...not sure if it helps, but I can ask her for more details:

"The base here in Guam is huge...well spread out among the island that is. On the base where I am we have everything...our NEX has 7 eating places and is much bigger than the NEX in Charleston...probably 3 or 4 would fit into ours. But considering the shopping stinks here they have to make the NEX big. We also have a mini home depot & Furniture Gallery near the Nex. I live like 5 minutes from the Pool, Beach, Gym, Movie Theater. CDC & Activity Center so it is awesome! I really have no reason to go off base since everything is here! So back to the places being spread out...apparently there are like 5 - 6 different housing choices on & off base but considered base housing still. The Naval Hospital here is an Emergency Room as a regular Clinic & Pharmacy. That is about 10 min where we live. Then their is Polaris Point where they hold events that is about 5 mins away."

hello navynurse06,

i'm originally from guam and currently a nursing student at the university of guam...i have a couple of friends who are in the military or whos husband is in the military who moved here to guam. how long will you be here for? well just to give an insight of how guam is, we do experience some typhoons but it has been a while since one passed by...and yes sometimes there will be power outages, but rarely. sometimes it depends on the area too. i think living off or in base is just by your preference..if you like everything else close by and convenient..staying on base would be okay...now that gas prices are going up..work would also be close by. other than that living off base is also good...most people prefer to from what i know.

other than that..i dont know what else to say..do you have any other questions that you would like to ask?

Does the Navy ship all of your stuff (i.e. furniture, etc) to your new address in Guam? or do they box it up and keep it stateside until your return? Thinking about joining the Navy and am just curious about the moving process. Thanks,

I've visited Guam for a few days so I have a general idea bout the island. I'll be there for 3 yrs. Yes, the navy ships all your stuff as part of the move, including your cars. I work with a nurse that was stationed in Guam and he suggest I live in military housing too. I'm sure that's what we are proably going to do. I'd be grateful for any more advice you would have for me and my husband about living in Guam. What are some areas to stay away from? Or what are some good areas to live in?
