PCOS and Metformin

Published

In regards to endoscopy and colonoscopies we usually do a finger stick on patients with DM pre procedure. We always have a standing order for all patients, so it's up to the RN to use her judgement in regards to when to do a fingerstick. I always do because of the metformin. But some RNs don't. Any opinions?

A diagnosis of PCOS does not equal DM.

Taking Metformin also does not equal DM.

So no, I would not agree with you that someone with PCOS or taking Metformin for something other than DM should require DM protocols.

Very true. Thanks for your professional input.

I have pcos and only took met when I was trying to conceive. You are just insulin resistant when you have pcos which puts you a greater risk for developing diabetes type II. Many women who have pcos are overweight and there is the thought that the met will help them lose weight and start ovulating again. I have not seen it help a whole lot. But until something comes on the market to help, met is the only thing they have.
