PCAs on med/surg

What are your daily duties? I have new employee orientation tomorrow! I'm excited, but nervous! I guess I just want to know what to expect? I have no experience at all. I just finished my CNA class last month.

I work as a PCT on med/surg at my hospital. Generally, my day consists of bed baths and helping patients ambulate to the bathroom (about 85%), answering call lights, feeding patients who need assistance, getting vital signs, blood sugars, and transporting patients. I also assist the nurses with whatever they might need. Oh yes, and I spend a lot of time answering the phone!

I had my orientation today, start on the floor tomorrow. I'm so nervous! I have no experience and my clinicals were at a nursing home. I hope I'm not in over my head, but I'm gonna do my best. I'm excited:)

Thats awesome!!! How did your first day go?! I have an interview for the MedSURG floor (pca) on tuesday!! Im so nervous i have no experience but i am in my last semester of pre reqs before nursing school! I hope your loving the med surg floor. Cant wait to hear how its going :)

Thanks for asking! It's going great, except my boss is trying to push me down to part time because she hired to many people? I can't afford to work just part time right now. Idk what I'm gonna do about that, but my job is awesome! Really hard, but awesome. How did your interview go?

Really? Is this a large hospital? They should not be able to do that, when you sign paperwork, it's kind of like a contract, they can't just PUSH you down to part time if you were suppose to be full time. I know they can say well we don't really need you this shift but you can still come in if you want we will find something for you to do... Thats how the situation should be. Would they not let you float?! and I got the job!!! i've done two days of orientation and have 2 more, then i'll start my preceptor-ship:)!

Welcome to the medsurg world:) You will find it is very busy and its a fast paced environment. I cannot stress enough to use proper body mechanics, always raise the bed up so you are not bending over. Protect your body and wear compression stockings.
