Paying for Nursing School: ADVICE PLEASE!

Hello all,

I was just wondering if anybody out there could give me some advice on paying for nursing school. I already have financial aid, but it won't be enough for my summer terms. My parents can't afford to help me at all either. I will have a part time job, but I don't think I can save enough for tuition purposes, etc.

Has anybody gotten a hospital to help pay for school with a contract to work for them after for a set amount of time? If so, does anybody have any information on hospitals with these types of programs? (In the Birmingham area)

Has anybody been in the NAVY RN program? They give you $34,000 over a two year period with a 3 year contract of working as a nurse in the Navy afterward (as an officer? I think?) If so, could anybody give me any insight on this? I'm going to talk to a navy recruiter but want some outside opinions as well.

Have you checked out any of the federal programs? HRSA website might be helpful. I received student loan help thru a contract with Indian Health Service and the experience was very rewarding for my career. Just a thought. Good Luck!

You did not mention if you are in an ADN or BSN program. I will assume you are in a BSN program because your Pell Grant should cover your costs for Summer term. You can get a student loan to cover the Summer. The Navy program is very hard to get into. Many people apply for it. I read where it can take months after application to be accepted into the program.

I am not aware of any hospitals in the B'ham area that have tuition reimbursement anymore. This is because there is NO nursing shortage in this area. I was told my hospital receives 40-60 applications for every RN job they post. With numbers like this there is no incentive for hospitals to pay any tuition.

If you are in an ADN program look into the WIA program. It will cover 100% of the costs of an ADN program, including tuition, fees, books, and supplies.

Regardless of what program you are in go to your financial aid office. They will be able to offer you the most help.

WIA in shelby county only covers up to 10,000 (waiting list, but GET ON IT)

WIA in Jeff state covers 100% (Must be a Jeffco resident for 6 mo)

Must meet certain financial qualifications. They can hassle you a bit when you first try to qualify so keep asking.
