in simple word patient education is a process of providing information to patients which will make them aware about health behaviors to improve health status.
patient education plays very important role in health practice .As we know lack of awareness directly or indirectly impact on our health status .As being nurses have a responsibility to tend to our patients needs as well as have equal responsibility to teach them about their condition and proposed treatment because prevention is better than treatment .
There are so many ways we can educate our patients according to patient ability to understand such as computer aid teaching ,demonstration, role play ,discharge instruction etc . depends upon patients understanding level .we as a nurse have responsibility to find out about patients understanding level .due to lack of awareness especially in developing countries we can still see patients are dying .i have seen, still people are believe in conservative treatment and dying .people are still thinking disease is a god punishment and they hide .They doesn't want to let society know about their disease condition and they don't want see doctors. people are worries about their society and ready to die .all that are going in our society because of lack of awareness .i have seen one family who hide his son disease condition while i was doing practice back home .later on i came to know that his son is suffering from cancer and his family thought thats god punishment and they were worried about what their society gonna think about them because of their perception towards disease they didn't want to go hospital for treatment .All this happening in our society . therefore to make them aware it is very important to educate patient and client . which is the only way to prevent or provide treatment on time and save the life .

The informed patient is the best patient, but that does not mean that the informed patient is going to make the same decision the rest of society is going to. This could be based on religious beliefs or general up bringing. Their is a lot of cultural diversity in nursing and we also need to respect that as well.
