The best manager is a working manager. One who will pick up the slack if someone calls in sick.
They are able to stay in touch with what the job entails and don't allow their skills to get rusty. Best of all, they have first hand knowledge of what their field staff is dealing with and are better able to go to bat for them.
It helps when the field staff is introduced to the new clinical manager, a printed bulletin from the office will do. It is embarrassing when a situation arises when you need to involve the clinical manager and you have no idea who s/he is. Speaks a lot about their involvement in supervision or anything else when they make no effort to inform the field staff as to their identity.

For those who are working in Medicare Home Health doing intermittent visits, talk to me about what you expect from your Patient Care Manger, Clinical Manager, Case Coordinator, or whatever you call it at your agency. What makes a good one? What makes a bad one? What do you wish yours would do or not do?
Thanks!
