Nursing Students SRNA

Published

I am currently in an accelerated BSN program. I will be done in August 2010 and hopefully start working in an ICU in august/ september. I have already taken the GRE.

My question is can I apply to start CRNA school in 2011? Looks like I need to be working for 1 year, which might be possible, but I have no idea how I will be able to ask my new supervisor for a recommendation, take the CCRN exam, etc. If someone has a time line or any other info that would be great! thank you.

You need the experience in ICU to learn a base of knowledge that you will draw on for the rest of your career. One year is not enough. I have taught nurse anesthesia students for 18 years, and 1 year is not enough. Just want to give an alternate view.

I would apply if you meet the minimum requirements and let the school be the judge if you're ready or not. I'm sure they're experienced in selecting applicants who have qualifications that are indicative of success in their program. If you don't make it in, reapply the next year and show persistence.

Tramaguy,

Worked with a guy who applied with only 6 mths experience, got an interview with only 7 mths, accepted with only 8 mths and started school at exactly 1 yr experience (total, not just ICU) and is now in his 3rd semester. If you want it bad enough, anything is possible....

Any idea how he (forementioned "guy") did his first year? Do you know if he felt like he was at a disadvantage not having more experience? Just curious....

Hey pups, been a while but not only did he do fine in the first year, he has since graduated and is working on the coast in FL. Like I previously said, if you want it bad enough, go for it...

In what type of anesthesia practice did he start in?
