I am new to this so please excuse my inexperience. I am trying to decide (once again) to enroll in online LPN to RN course. I almost signed up 2-3yrs ago and "chickened out" after speaking with a RN who did the program. She told me they do not pass a lot of students during the clinical exam phase. They fail many of them for trivial matters. She told me the class she started with was down to less than 1/2 the size by the 2nd day! I don't want to spend all the money only to be failed for a minor mistake (in their eyes). I am a good nurse and have 27 hears experience and know I have to work another 20 years so I feel getting my RN would be beneficial. Even though a co-worker of mine decided I am "too old" to get my RN. Also, what is the best online college to further my education? Thanks for your help!!

If you have any lingering doubts about passing a clinical proficiency exam, then you should probably stick with a traditional program. It is possible to pass the clinical exam. Thousands have succeeded in the Excelsior College program. Likewise, many have failed the clinical exam, as many as three times, and not completed that program. The statistics would have to be obtained from the school itself. It is all in how you look at it. Do you want to take that chance? Or do you want something that is more of a sure thing? It is a decision that you need to make for you. Good luck.

I heard the clinical failings in that program were for minor things like not wearing or changing gloves and washing your hands, not pulling the privacy curtain, etc. If your comfortable with all those minor things then your good.
Read recently where someone failed because they did not know that all one had to do to get a flush out of a 10 ml vial was to draw the flush, then waste the remainder. Nerves are nerves, but in this case they cost you $1950 plus hotel bill and airfare.

Maybe an option can be to practice those skills while you are studying independently in Excelsior. I had a friend who actually hooked up with a friend that ran a clinical lab on Saturdays, so, what she did was pay her friend a few bucks to review the skills to perfection. She did pass the first time. It can take a bit of planning, but I figure if you are studying at your own pace, maybe taking some time out to review those skills the same way you originally did in the LPN nursing program may be an advantage.
I did hear that many don't fare well, depending on the whim of the CI. But, that doesn't mean it has to be you. You may luck up and have a person that at least sees that you are putting every effort into trying and may let a few small infractions slide.
