Passed nclex - tips

Published

So I promised myself that if I had passed then I would post a few tips for anyone writing the test. Firstly, I was never an A student, which is why I had to take a month and a half to prepare for this exam. Secondly, do not listen to anyone that claims this exam to be easy, because it definitely is not. Unless you had done extremely well within your program than you need to study. Also, I suggest you should study even if you had done well, because the questions on this exam are unlike any you've seen during school. Now, the core resources I used were: saunders and Kaplan online review. For the next month you will need to make this exam your priority. By this I mean, putting away any social events and sticking to a strict study schedule. Personally, I stuck to a 10am-9pm study schedule. It is difficult, but manageble for anyone serious about the exam. Next, when using resources, stick to a single guide for studying, as for questions, use as many resources as you want. The way I studied was that I would focus on content for 2hours and then do 50 questions. In total, I would do 150-200 questions per day. Many guides suggest doing at least 3000 nclex style questions before doing the exam. As a review I used Kaplan because of the many good things I heard about. I found the strategies to be extremely helpful because of the way they evoke critical thinking. I had also heard great things about Hurst, but never tried it, because I felt content was not that much of an issue for me. Ok, so now that I covered my main resources and my study schedule, I will go into general strategies. Firstly, do not stress, passing this test is completely within your control for as long as you take studying seriously. A small portion incorporates luck in getting the questions related to the topic your strong at, however I made sure to cover all my weaknesses and so will you. Secondly, make sure to eat well while you study and never neglect exercise for health and stress relief. Thirdly, remember when you finish the exam, you will feel like you had failed unless you're extremely confident. This is completely normal and almost everyone I know had felt this right after. Also, take a 5-10min break every hour and come back with a fresh head, do no neglect them because this will compromise your ability to pass. Lastly, what I found helped me during the exam was to hide the question number as well as, the timer. This allowed me to concentrate more on the questions rather than constantly worrying about how much time I had left. Although, if you're a slow test taker, I would recommend occasionally checking the timer and question number.

Remember, you have the ability to pass, because otherwise you probably wouldn't had graduated from nursing school. Also, despite the exam being difficult it is very much doable and many had conquered it. Be strong and confident in your ability to pass. Good luck

I 100% agree with you . I passed my NCLEX RN on 16th October first time I used the same resources as you.One thing I want to add is that please don't care about your scores on Kaplan qs or anywhere else read carefully the rationals and make notes they are very useful to review in last days. Yes this exam is very stressful so eat a good breakfast and take some healthy snack with you.I wish everyone good luck.
