Hi ....

I am a 37 yr. old, single mother of two and have decided to go back to school to finish my nursing degree. It took a long time to get up the courage but I am going to give it a try..I plan on starting my pre-req. this fall while continuing to work full-time, maybe one\two classes a semester to see how it all works out. Does anyone on this site attend PCCC? I would love to hear what you think about the program....and any advice would be great! Also I would love to know of any good jobs in hospitals for nursing students....

Hi! Don't freak out- you will be okay. It's just that to be honest sometimes it seemed that the prof.s were completely aware that we were at their mercy and didn't have any problem taking advantage of that. It was definitely not every professor but it was enough to make certain times very challenging. But I think that goes on in every nursing program, at least from what I have heard. I happened to have a strong class that stood together for example when it came to fighting unfair test questions. I don't want to mention any names online but certain professors were tough-unnecessarily- in clinicals- on the other hand, though, there were those that made me remember daily why I wanted to be a nurse. Overall it is a good program, you will learn a lot- it takes a lot of determination and hard work but it pays off. I graduated in May 08, passed my boards in July, and started my job September 8th.. it will be worth it, don't let all this worry you. Just work hard and keep the end in sight. :)

hello jessiekrn or anybody out there. i just joined this forum. i hope u can help me out with some questions i have to ask u. i just applied to pccc in paterson for their lpn to rn transition starting this may. i took the nln ace 1 exam but i was told i did not pass. i got 66 and the passing score they want is 70 and higher. please i just wanna know regarding my score in the exam am i gonna be automatically rejected to get in the program? the program starts may this year. i already email one of the nursing directors and asked the same question but was told that there is a committee that meets and reviews applications and they make the final decision. i already submitted my transripts from previous college i went to and my letter of recommendation with my transcripts from lpn school with a gpa of 3.30 and i already took my a&p 1 &2, microbiology,chem,eng1&2,psy with grades of c and better in all these courses. it's just the entrance exam i did not pass that's giving me a concern. pls i need to know what u think. anybody u know who have gone through this and still got accepted based on the fact that their entrance exam score did not meet up with the passing score. i am just so depressed based on my score. pls anybody out there should pls reply to this. ur effort is greatly appreciated. thanks

Hey.. I graduated in may of 08..wish i could be of more assistance to you but unfortunately i really dont know what their admission criteria are.. i do know they are pretty strict with their requirements, regardless of other credentials you may have.. can you re-test? is it possible to make an appointment with a guidance counselor at PCCC? let me know if u have any questions, again sorry i cant really provide u a definite answer on this one..

hello everyone! this is my first time writing on the site and i have to say i LOVE it. Everyone is great on here. I am currently a hunter college student. I am completing all my pre-reqs this semester thank god! i am currently in the process of applying to nursing programs. Mainly the 2 year BSN programs since i am already 21 years old and definitely not wanting to join a 4 year program. I have had the worst time finding a program that is not competitive. I am around a 3.1 gpa and i have been interning at a surgical center for the last few months observing all the nurses in pre and post op. I wanted to become a nurse since i was a junior in high and right now i feel like i am just setting myself up to fail :( I looked at seaton hall and did not get it as well as ramapo and saint peters. It is ten times harder being a transfer students applying to a program. Right now i am crossing my fingers on Caldwell College and maybe even PCCC??? anyone out there can give me any advice? I'm also considering an associates degree, although my older brother who is a trauma surgeon at hackensack hospital thinks that an associates degree wont get me anywhere these days just my BSN. anyone out there is the same position I am in??

thanks, looking forward to some great replies.

Hi!! Just wanted to let you know, most of the programs out there are pretty competitive, and they should be..school has to prepare you for the job, and the job definitely isn't easy!! That being said I was in your same position not long ago..I was about to graduate with my BA before I realized I wanted to go into nursing..and I didn't want to go back for another 4 years..I couldn't afford it. The accelerated BSN programs were incredibly pricy, and I didn't feel good about "fast-tracking" into a field that was completely new and foreign to me. My point is, and what I wanted to tell you, is the associates degree will definitely get you "somewhere". I went to pccc, which was by no means easy or non_competitive, but was certainly more affordable, I got a job (and in most nursing jobs these days you realy would never know who is associates prepared or who has their bsn), and now, 3 years later when things are more financially stable, I'm going back for the bsn in september, part time while I continue to work. Part of me wishes id figured it all out when I was 18 because I've definitely taken the longer road, but in the big scheme of things, it worked out fine. I just wanted to tell u it can be done, and since there r so many ways to get there, its up to u. But, and no offense to your brother, you may be better off taking advice from nurses when it comes to actual nursing. I mean this in the best way but a lot of people who might "look down" on an associates degree do not realize the difficulty of an associates degree in nursing or how well it will train u to be a nurse. So if u do decide to go for the associates, be prepared for a lot of ppl who don't understand. Just see what they have to say when they need u in an emergency.:) good luck to u..hope this clears some things up for u.
