Part-time L&D RN residency (Seattle)

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Hello! I will be graduating from an Associates Degree Nursing Program and sitting for the NCLEX next spring/summer '09. I am very interested in going into L&D and am wondering if part-time residencies are EVER offered in this area? I will be having a baby during the summer and won't be able to work full-time (and at all until Sept/Oct) but I know that I CAN'T lose my newly gained nursing skills.

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

(Seattle is my home town in case any of you know that area.)

There really isn't anyway to train into a specialty unit part time, at least not effectively in my opinion...you have to get alot of time and alot of patients day in and day out to get a good orientation and learn all you need to know...But that is only an opinion, there may be part time internships--altho I have never heard of it..Good Luck!

I have a friend that I graduated nursing school with that stayed home right after graduation to care for her new baby. In my opinion, you arent going to lose any skill, because right out of school you havent even begun to use them yet. I know you have hands on practice in school but that is very different from the amout of hands on and critical thinking you will be doing once employed. You have mimimal practice right out of school. If you have to wait to become employed, then i'm sure once at work you will have plenty of hands on time to become proficient. I don't think there will be a difference if you work immediatley out of school or take sometime to be at home with the baby. Either way there is a steep learning curve when becoming employed as a brand new nurse. Your new baby is only a baby once, you will still have your liciense if you choose to take some time at home. Just MHO. Take care and good luck!
