I have posted this under the Entrepreneurial Forum as well, but in order to appeal to a wider audience have posted here as well:
I am wondering if any members who have experience working as a Paramedical Examiner would mind posting their thoughts about obtaining this type of work in a part-time capacity to supplement their income.
I work full time as a registered nurse, but I would like the opportunity to start my own part - time business and am wondering if this is a viable option. It would seem that being an independent contractor with companies like Examone, APPS, Portamedic, etc. is the way to go.
What is the typical assignment like? What type of equipment is needed? What type of reimbursement should be expected? Please share your thoughts, suggestions, and experiences.
Thanks in advance!

I currently do part-time duty for one of those companies. The job itself isn't too bad, the companies supply the material such as lab kits, centrifuge, and such, but the pay sucks. I live in a rural area so that is probably part of the problem due to lack of population. If you live in a more populated area it is possible you could get enough cases weekly to make it worth your time. I too have been thinking about rather than working for an office, I would rather "hook-up" with one of those companies and run this as my own business. Just not sure on how to go about it.

As a former EMT-P and a current RN, part of the discrepancy in pay is related to the job title. Paramedics make less than RNs, therefore even contract paramedic examiners will be paid at a lower rate. I am in no way saying this is fair or right, just looking at it from a market value perspective. It used to really tick me off when I could perform duties/skills on a truck that I was not allowed to do in the ED for half the pay... JMHO....
