Nurses Career Support

Published

Hey There.

Thanks for taking time to read this. Brace yourself, this may get lengthy.

I have been a nurse for 2.5 years now. Most experiences have been bad than good. I went into nursing school to be able to take care of family. One particular person passed away 2 months ago. I took care of him for 2 years give or take, and especially during the last 3 months of his life, which were a living hell for him, and for me to watch and help him through. I had a new job of 3 months I had to quit to be there for him, I wouldn't take that back. Now that

Im back to work, I have literally had 3 panic attacks within the last month. I've quit 1 job, my dream job I thought, and have had 2 more panic attacks at a new job, causing me to not be able to go into work. I'm ruining my career. I'm in school for NP, 2.5 years away. I'm completely paralyzed right now. Does anyone have any pointers? I'm gonna try meds, and am in therapy for about a week now. Friends. Help a colleague out!

Thanks.

I think you need to see a therapist and consider PTSD therapy or group therapy. I had a similar situation, similar symptoms, it really changed my life.

I use to have really bad panic attacks, but I just say to myself, its all in the head, and everything is going to be fine..

Have you addressed your concerns with your healthcare provider or a therapist? Sounds like you've been through a lot and could use some help. You may also want to reconsider how much you've taken on- loss of a family member recently, new job, and school all sounds like a lot and I'm sure has added stress on top of the stress you were already under.

Thank you. I am recently on medication and started therapy. As soon as I have a moment of enlightenment, I freeze every time I'm supposed to be at the bedside. I have another job lined up that does not use nursing skills, but still in the medical field. I just hate that it's a waste of skills, and of something I love, just can't handle right now. I hope I haven't blown my chances in nursing. I'm in NP school right now. I think a clinic job is a perfect fit for me, but I really don't know yet.
