I am a telemetry nurse trying to transfer to mother baby at the hospital I work at now. They are doing panel interviews in 2 weeks n the ones on the panel is the manager, charge nurse, midwife and pediatrician. I have no prior experience in mother baby and am very nervous about the interview. Any tips?? Any situational type questions I shoud prepare for? I really want to transfer n think this is my one and only shot to get in.

These panel interviews can be nerve wracking (I had one too). The only tips I can give you is to brush up on your interviewing skills. Everyone on that panel knows you have zero M/B experience so don't anticipate questions related to the speciality. It's more likely you'll be asked questions like: Why do you want to transfer to M/B? Tell us about a conflict you had with a superior or co-worker and how you solved that conflict? Tell us about your greatest accomplishment. Tell us where you feel you failed and how you learned from that experience.

Those type of nerve-wracking questions. The interview will be more about if you are a good fit for the department and less about if you could spot a post partum hemorrhage. They'll train you on the job.

Also, take in a professional portfolio. If you can, include a pic so they can remember you when reviewing resumes that go in the "maybe" pile. Include another copy of your resume (one page, printed on resume paper), a copy of your degree(s), your RN license and a copy of all of your certifications (and letters of recommendations and/or awards if you have them). That portfolio is your chance to SHINE, to stand out and to be remembered after you're gone.

Good luck and don't forget posture, how you dress (100% business from your hair, neatly manicured SHORT nails, minimal jewelry and makeup) down to your shoes. My department manager looked me up and down and even at my purse during our interview. Turn and face the person who's questioning you and look them in the eye. And don't forget to breathe (and to wear your Depends) :)

GOOD LUCK!

I was in the exact same boat as you. They will most likely ask you situational questions. Think of all the good AND bad situations that have happened to you as a nurse and prepare to discuss them. And also prepare to tell them WHY you really want to work in that area.
