I'm sorry to hear about your challenge with the NCLEX. In Illinois, the requirement for remedial courses typically depends on the state board's specific instructions after failing the NCLEX.

Illinois state legislation says, "A graduate who does not take an examination for licensure within the first 90 days after graduation and a graduate who has failed the exam will be required to return to the institution of higher education for remediation prior to repeating or taking the exam. A graduate may retake the exam only after the institution of higher education provides approval."

Since it does not specify instructions for international students, I recommend contacting the Illinois Board of Nursing directly to get specific information on the types of remedial courses they require, approve, and whether you have flexibility in choosing where to take them.

I would also get it in writing. If you talk to someone on the phone, you can always follow up with an email to confirm your understanding.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
