My PACU's policy is that the RN transports the patients to the floor with a PCA and the RN transports their patient to Phase 2. We are staffed 24 hours a day. We don't have PCA's that work the night shift and we use the OR PCA or the RN's transport themselves

Michelle: I work in a busy County facility with 12 OR's and 400 bed capacity. We average 25-40 cases per day and I utilize 6 RN's and a very busy unit secretary/transporter. In our facility, if the patient is an ICU patient or Step-Down ICU patient, they MUST go with a rgistered nurse. If the patient is on any drips or in a monitored bed, an RN must go. Now, if the patient is a floor patient, stable with baseline vitals signs then the transporter can take him alone to his floor. We do not have a Phase I to Phase II recovery system (due to our current staffing shortage). I hope this helps in your research!

We transport with a member of anesthesia, if there is one around, and a RN

We transport based on ASA Class. If the patient was ASA class 1 or 2, then a CNA can transport. ASA 3--RN discrection. ASA 4 --RN must go. But as you are asking about after hours...in our unit that means an RN and CNA. The CNA can do it herself, but it goes more quickly if two go. RN on weekends when CNA is off. We utilize hospital transport (escort) only as a last resort.

If the pt. had MAC or general, they are transported by an RN. If they were IV Conscious (our IVC don't come to phase I PACU) they are returned by a transport aide.

At our facility, whoever can, does. We recently let our help go (budget cuts), so if we need help transporting a pt, we get our own help. Only if there is tele, or a cardiac drip do we require an RN.
