Overweight RNs..employed/unemployed?

Published

Hello everyone. I am a newly board passer last July 2010. I am 30 years old and a second courser BSN. I am currently looking for a job, but I am a bit worried to apply as a volunteer/staff nurse in different hospitals (especially the big hospitals) due to the fear of not being qualified because I am currently overweight (180 lbs.). Any thoughts, experiences are all welcome. Thank you. :D

You have to overcome that fear. :)

I weigh almost the same as you when I started as a nurse. I too am a second courser. And I am also 30 years olf now. :)

But i have been working as a nurse since 2005. 2 years in the province. and more than 2 years abroad. :)

Good luck! :)

Just a friendly reminder. First, do all the ways now to lose your weight. Remember, nurses are knowledgeable about health and we know for a fact that any alteration in the normal BMI is considered abnormal. Second, we are reinforcing people to be healthy as much as we could and that means being a good role model with them; an RN that depicts good body image. Third, start now. There's no other way you can overcome this concern if you will act now. Lastly, not all hospitals care about nurses weight. However, remember that you will need to take series of medical exam as part of screening process. Any alteration to normal body weight might put you at risk. That's all and hope you overcome it! :)
