I am a senior at the University of Iowa and I have been having a good last few semesters (all As and Bs) and I am finishing up my last semester as a senior right now and did not do so well. I got a C in Microbiology and a B in my healthcare finance and am at an A- in my chemistry class but still have to take the final and do well to keep the A. I had also gotten a C in my nutrition and health class last semester which also does not look good.

tl;dr my senior year was not as good as a I had planned.

Back in April, I applied for the Iowa Nursing School and am finishing my last few prerequisites for nursing. I think I had a very strong essay (talked about my experiences at volunteering at the hospital and my job that has nursing qualities to it).

Currently, my OVERALL GPA is at a 3.02 and is threatening falling below 3.0. If I were to keep my GPA at exactly a 3.0 or if I have a 2.99 as an overall, do I still have a chance at nursing school?

My PREREQUISITE GPA is currently at a 3.38, which could still be better. Will they likely care more about this GPA than my overall (which also involved classes I had to take for a previous major that I didn't do well in)

Looking at my entire transcript, I started out weak freshman year and improved sophomore year onward. It's just this last year has been hard. My anxiety and depression has been worsening because of school stress and I think it has been affecting my studies.

Iowa allows you to have 2 science prerequisites incomplete when applying, is it possible for me to retake my nutrition and microbiology course this summer? That is, should I ask the College of Nursing if I can do this, or might it affect the way they see me in my application?

Sorry the questions are all over the place. Answer whatever you can! Any ex- or current UI nursing students would be awesome!

It'll depend on the nursing school's requirements. They might do overall GPA or they might only do pre-req GPA (I don't know if one or the other is more common or not). As far as repeating the courses, that's another thing you'd have to check against the school's admission requirements. Some schools won't take someone on with repeated courses.

I think your best bet would to get a specific list of their admission requirements. If you still have questions, speak with an admissions rep if you can and have your questions answered. This is truly the best route to go as they can give you first hand information.

I had a lot of similar questions myself for the program I'm applying to, and the admissions department has been wonderful in answering them which has made me more confident in my path and what I have going against me or for me.

Iowa allows a maximum of 3 chances to repeat a course (be it the same one three times or one repeat for 3 different courses)

What sucks is that I find out if I am accepted around July so there isn't much time to fix things

I've heard their nursing school is very competitive. If you want to get in to their program, I would suggest re-taking ALL the classes you got C's in, and some of the courses you got B's in. Not trying to be a downer- But if this is really what you want to do you may want to look into a community college program. Nursing school is very competitive, and your grades may hold you back from getting in to a program unless you retake some classes. Also, University of Iowa has a very prestigious nursing program. You'll be competing with people who have 3.9-4.0 overall and prerequisite GPA's. I'm not trying to be mean, just trying to help you be realistic :)

As for your questions- I would definitely retake those classes over the summer. It shows that you are trying to make yourself more competitive!! What do you have to lose? I think you may have a chance... A very small chance I'm sorry to say :(

Best of luck this admission cycle. You may have to reapply, but don't give up if this is truly what you want!
