Outpatient To Acute Hemodialysis Tips

I'm looking for any advice/tips on going from outpatient to acute hd. I'm currently a staff nurse in an output clinic for a little over 6mos now ( nurse for almost 3 yrs with some hospital and community health exp), and i landed a per diem job in a hospital inpt hd unit. I know there are obv differences, just looking for a little more details so i have an idea of what to expect.

Following! I am interested in learning more about acutes as well. I currently have 8 months of chronic hemodialysis experience. I was told that I would need at least one full year of experience before I could transition to acutes.

what company do you work for? I had 6 mo experience and I landed an acutes per diem job, even though its taken some time with the process and already having a ft time. I don't think the 1 yr rule is set in stone, it was probably a suggestion on a time frame, but by the time you have everything all set up you will be at 1 yr already anyways!

I'm at American Renal Associates. I think you're right-- with this company it's a year minimum, but I think I could probably find per diem/ contact work in acutes.

@LisaNicoleRN17 how did you find acutes coming from a chronic setting? Was it a hard transition? What were the main differences and the hardest part of acutes? Was the pay significantly higher than chronic? I am new to dialysis and also curious about acutes. Was the 6months mark a good point experience wise or would you suggest more experience? Thanks in advance?

Hi! So since that post I actually lost the per diem acutes job at the hospital after like 5 shifts..they were bought out by a contract with Davita ? so after that happened I decided to cross within fresenius Because I didn't want to start over completely somewhere else- and depending on the location u have to do crazy amount of orientation. The first site I've been training at is a rehab.. so even tho it’s considered “acutes” its not the pts are stable similar to Chronics.. im hoping my next site is at an actual hosp. The difference mostly is the documenting system.. u can have 1 or 2 pts at a time and u document q 15 mins ..plus being in a place that u don't with ppl who don't know u or dialysis is different. At its core dialysis is dialysis.. once your comfortable with that then I think everything else is a small learning curve. I've been looking for Dialysis ppl to network with.. let me know if your interested ill give u my IG !

Yes I am hoping this is true as I am wanting to transition to acutes after about 6m-1yr experience.
