Our Lady of the Lake College, BR, Traditional ASN

Hey I'm new to this site. So forgive me if this is posted in the wrong section.

I'm from the great state of Washington working on my nursing pre-reqs. I've been looking at schools all around the country. Our Lady of the Lake College in Baton Rouge, LA holds my attention. I would like more information on the schooling as they aren't very good at answering the phones or have a more information request.

Is their ASN program entry level to RN? As the curriculum seems very light (as in not so many classes) compared to other ASN programs.

What are they most looking for in the essay as I've read in a previous post the essay is heavily weighed & is a big deciding factor?

Is this fairly hard school to be accepted? (yes I know every school is very competitive, but they have classes of a 100?)

Also the 6 hour class requirement to be accepted? What exactly did you do if you were not a current student at the time you were accepted. That kind of confused me...since I obviously woudn't move down to LA just to take a course at OLOL to apply and be rejected.

Another question is the Semester II is that the begining of the nursing program?

Oh yes, BTW, I've been hearing OLOL isn't as great as it seems....why is that..what's so bad about it?

Have you considered taking your pre-req's in WA and then applying to nursing school at OLOL. (Without going into much detail yes it is hard to get in because they have so many applicants for those 100 spots).

Yes I am currently taking pre-reqs which is why I am looking at nursing schools.

I am a recent graduate of the OLOL ASN program (December 09) and yes you have to take the 6 hours at OLOL College before applying to their nursing program. I had a Bachelor's degree from a state university and I still had to take 6 hours before I could apply to the ASN program. I just took two classes that I didn't need but would help me in the long run. I have heard a lot of negative things about the Lake's program but I loved it. You get out what you put in. You really have to work for that degree and I think most people are not willing to do what needs to be done or they don't like it and so they talk bad about the program. Bottom line is: I did it, I graduated, and now I am a nurse. I don't know what to tell you about trying to do this from out of state because even if you do the 6 hours at the Lake, there is no guarantee that you will get accepted. Just thought that I would give you some info from someone who has been there and done that. Good luck!

I heard many different things about Our Lady of the Lake they having their own way of doing things and are not highly recommended in this area...you may want to look into other schools in the area as well i.e. Southeastern, Baton Rouge General seem to be good schools. Good luck with your endeavors :)
