OU 2nd Degree Accelerated BSN Program Summer Cohort

Published

I was wondering if anyone is slotted to begin in May 2010? I was slotted for the winter but received a call today asking if I wanted to move up to the May start date, to which I said yes. I'm so excited to get going. Is there a facebook group or anything out there forming yet for students?

I would like to join if there is. I am nervous, scared, and excited all at the same time. I just want to get going to changing careers and be happy!

Dave

I am not in the summer cohort, but congratulations!

I am interviewing sometime in the next 2 months with the hopes of getting moved up early (if I get in... eek!) so this post gives me great hope as you seem to have moved up significantly! congrats!

I had no idea I would be considered to be moved up. I had emailed the director early on (just after I had been accepted) and asked what I had to do to get moved up. She told me that students who took one of the classes early (forgot what it is called) get a first look at being moved up.

Well, because I still have a full time job (changing careers) I could not take a class early on without quitting my job (and wasn't in the position to), so I never thought I'd be up for it. When I got called, I was quite surprised, and it made me really nervous. I was still thinking I was 6 months away from quitting my career (which is a huge risk if I don't make it through) and am now going to be 2-3 months away from quitting. But I'm excited...

I have no idea how else they choose the order to call people after the students who take an early course. I would guess it's by your GPA and also by your interview, and how much they thought of you. I thought I had a very interview (best in my life maybe) and I have a very high GPA, so maybe that's what it was. Just speculating though...

Hi,

Congrats Firehawk on your acceptance and for being moved up. That has to feel great. I applied and am currently waiting on an interview which is supposed to be in March. I feel I have a good chance but am worried that they only look at 5 classes when other schools I have applied to look at 9 or 10. I have a 3.5 which I think likely puts me at the low end of most applicants. But I have a year of volunteering at hospital and wrote a great goal statement. So I am hoping they look at more than just grades. Any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I also took Patho this past term and did very well. I guess it was a risk taking it before I got accepted but I only had two other classes. Anyhow, good luck to you and anyone else who is applying. One of my friends is starting in May at OU.

I also took the patho and nutrition courses very early, before I had even interviewed, banking on the fact that I got accepted. Just answer the questions from your heart. I think they are looking for genuine people as well as those with nice grades.

You must have a bachelor's in something already, so that should demonstrate that you are capable of learning :).

Yes, I always speak from the heart. My feeling if you are not in it for the right reasons, it will show. I have a science degree so I definitely feel I can handle the program but I still expect it to be very challenging. Some of my friends got calls on interviews form OU already but I did not. I imagine it's because they have close to 4.0's and I didn't make the cut:confused:. I am not sure why but my guess is they had quite a few people with really high GPA's. Hopefully I will still get a chance to interview. I took all my classes at a university and my feeling is many who apply go community college route - which may not be as difficult. Not sure since I don't know much about the community colleges. But it is what it is.

Thanks and good luck to you. One question: Do you think they looked at your grades in the three nursing pre-req's?? I am wondering if they look favorably on someone like me who took Patho and did well. I did to show them that I am serious about going there and I hope it helps me. Also, do they strictly look at grades when it comes to granting interviews or does the resume, goal statement come factor in?? Thanks Firehawk.

I think it's alot more than grades. The grades are nice, but I've been in my field long enough to know that grades don't mean a whole heck of a lot. You have to talk to the person and see what they can do (demonstrate). I was not called when I was notified if I got accepted. I was emailed.

I am not sure if they looked at the nursing grades or not. I was focused on trying to get As in everything so that all doors would be open to me. But, I would suspect if they don't like you at the interview, you probably would not be accepted, even if you had a 4.0. So just talk from the heart. Just like you said, if you are in it for the wrong reasons, it will probably show.

Hi, I actually WILL be interviewing. I finally got the email am set for the first week of March:yeah:. I interview well and will just show my passion for helping and caring for others. Hoping for some good news as it's so hard to get into any program. The bar has been raised so high with so many going into nursing. I hope there will be jobs when we are done!!

congrats on getting an interview! I wonder how they determine what order the interviews go in? If it's random or by GPA or alphabetically? Hmmmm. Good luck!

I'm not sure. I believe as long as you have at least a 3.0 cumulative in nursing pre-req's you will get an interview. When i went to the informational meeting, they told us that the top 50 students get ranked and interviewed first; then the next group, etc. But I am not entirely sure if this is still the case. Are you done with all your pre-reqs(5 core)?? I know they won't interview until all five are completed. I'm excited but realize it's very hard to get in to these programs. I am also applying to two other schools. I should hear by the Feb. 19th on one of them. It's been a lot of work but hopefully it will be worth it. Good luck!! I guess we took over Firehawk's thread as he is looking for admitted students to the May class. Sorry Firehawk.

Well, when I interviewed last year, I was notified by webmail (from Oakland) by the director to reply with dates/times that would work for you (she gives the days and the hours that the interviews are conducted). You can simply reply with your maybe top 5 choices and they'll let you know which slot is available. It's rather easy.

Don't worry about it. I'm excited for you guys. I remember the same feelings you guys are going through before my interview. And I'm sure nursing students reading my posts are thinking the same about me. I hope you guys do well and hope to be your colleagues one day. I think it would be fun to be on the panel that interviews students. When I interviewed, they had a student that was I think 3rd semester there to get her opinion. I'd love to do that.

I'm super nervous about the program. I don't know why, I just am. I always get that way though. I'm going to be quitting a career to start a new career, and that means no job for a year. That's very scary, because once I close the door on my job, I can't go back through it. It's just a major change in my life. But you know, this I think is what I was always meant to do. I like to help people and it gives me fulfillment from my job, something I don't get now. I can't wait to get into it, but I am very nervous about the major change.

What Bachelor's degrees do you guys have that are interviewing?
