Organic chemistry question

o-chem is pretty tough, it took a lot of extra visits to the professor and tutor for me to pass.

maybe there is a reason it isn't offered online

I think Pitt has a distance class, as does the university of Illinois. http://www.scs.uiuc.edu/chem/text/undergrad/distlearn.html

Just type distance learning organic chemistry in the google search engine and you should come up with quite a few.

Unless you aced inorganic (general) chemistry--and by "aced" I mean a 3.8 or better--you are setting yourself up for failure by taking organic chemistry through distance learning. That said, I don't know of any programmes offering o-chem through distance learning, probably because there is usually an intensive lab portion of the class.

If you don't have time to take an in-person class, I'd consider taking a leave of absence from work or delaying taking the o-chem class instead of trying to squeeze o-chem in around work. :eek:

I tend to disagree, if you are self motivated and disciplined you can learn anything from distance education. The only difference is that the information you need to learn is coming from something other than the mouth of the instructor.

Penn State has an Organic Chem class online. I just started it as a refresher from undergrad, so I can't tell you how hard it is as of yet. The class consists of 15 lessons and two tests. Each lesson has points attached to them as well. The web site for info is: http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu

Checkout Excelsior College . On the right side of the screen click on the distancelearn database and enter organic chem in the search. There are some programs listed there. And as for learning the material this way, if you are motivated and want to do well, then it should not be a problem. I took both A & P I and II online. It was hard doing it that way, but I benifeted from the extra software that I got and when I ran into a problem, I could look in depth into it. I was able to review the info in detail whenever I wanted at home, and did not have to go to a lab and I was able to get whatever I needed done. Good luck!!!

Thank you so much for all the great info! I know it will be difficult but I made A+'s in both Chem 1 and Chem 2 (not braggin at all, just answering your questions) in undergrad and I actually learn better by reading things on my own! With an internet class, I can learn at my own pace and spend time studying whenever I need to. I just don't want to have to alter my orientation schedule by having to go to class two nights a week! I can't put O-chem off because I my top choice for anesthesia school wants you to at least be enrolled in O-chem when you interview. Again, thank you all very much for the info and advice.

You may also want to check out UC Berkeley Extension. They offer an O-Chem class via independant learning as well. An excellent school with a good rep for distance education. Good luck.

Just wanted to wish you luck. Everyone seems to have offered you some good suggestions... I also would just double check and make sure that your university has no qualms about it being an internet course.. I don't see why the would... but just to be safe.

Schools generally do not indicate on the transcript whether it is a distance course or classroom, they are considered comprable so there is no point.

Every school has their own rules and regulations... just think it would be a good idea to make sure your school doesn't want your learning experience to be in the classroom vs online. Just to be on the safe side.
