University of Portland BSN January 13' cohort

U.S.A. Oregon

Hey everyone,

In March I got my acceptance letter into the BSN program at UP and I recently finalized my decision to attend. I know many people that have gone to UP, both recent and not so recent, and I'm really excited about it. I've felt really welcomed by everyone so far and can't wait to get to know my future classmates. I was hoping for fall start, but honestly now that I've had some time to plan, I think the Spring (Jan 2013) start will be perfect. I'll have some time to earn money, and do a little traveling before school consumes my life.

I thought I'd start a thread for future UP students. Feel free to discuss whatever you'd like; you're decision to pursue nursing, pre-req journey, other schools you considered...

Since just about everyone's on Facebook, I've created a fb group for the spring (Jan 2013) BSN cohort. If you'll be starting the BSN program at UP in January, please join. It's a great way to meet, talk, and collaborate.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all soon!

Hi Austin! I was just accepted off the waitlist last week! I am so excited. I will be sending in my deposit soon. I just went on FB and found the group you created. Looking forward to meeting you and the rest of our cohort!

Congrats on getting in! That's awesome, and I'm sure it's a huge relief. Were you looking at any other schools? Where did you do your prereqs?

Glad you found the group, hopefully we'll get a few more people on there.

I think all the UP accepties have stopped checking here sense letters were mailed out so long ago.

Yes, thank you! Definitely a huge relief :) Yes, I also applied to 2 OHSU programs (the 3 yr. BS and the Accelerated BS) and applied to PCC. I have a prior bachelor's degree in Biology, but took some other necessary prereqs (A&P, Psych, etc.) at PSU and PCC. How about you -- did you apply elsewhere?

What are some things you've heard from U.P. Nursing grads you know?

congrats to those accepted and attending UofP SoN. i will be starting fall 2012. looking to connect with other students in my cohort. deactivated fb yesterday so that is not an option for me.

I work with several nurses that went to UP a while ago, and some more recent. I have a friend that graduated in 2009 that now works in the ICU at the University of Colorado Hospital. There's a girl I went to high school with that graduated in 2010 who works as a pediatric nurse now. Pretty much everything I have heard has been positive, but of course these are all anecdotes. I applied to UP, Linfield, and OHSU, but to be honest I think they're all pretty comparable programs. I'm sure if you talk to enough people you'll hear both good and bad things about every school, but I've worked with great nurses from all of them. All of their NCLEX pass rates are similar, and they're all pretty competitive. Considering all this, I don't think which one of these schools you went to is going to hold you back from getting a job. What counts the most in finding a job is how strong of a individual candidate you are. It's a bit silly to think some hiring manager is going to immediately discount you because you went to "that school." What they're going to weigh the most is what attributes you bring to the table. That's why I'm happy to be going to UP. I applied to all three, and only got accepted to UP, but it was my first choice because of what I've heard and what I've experienced when visiting the campus and talking to admissions people.

And Congrats to you too Jason! Probably a good call on deactivating your fb account.. I know I waste way too much time on there.

Hi guys: I will be in your cohort too. Do you guys have any idea about our school schedule?

Welcome and congrats mk!

I'm pretty sure our schedule will be something like the one found near the last page of this link:
