OR Jobs for New Grads

Specialties Operating Room

I'm a new nursing student and dream of working in the OR. Are there OR jobs for newbie RN's? If not, where do you suggest working (ED, ICU, med-surg) and for how long before moving to the OR?

Specializes in OR,ER,med/surg,SCU.

Some places require a new nurse to work med/surg a year 1st. Alot of them do not anymore. I would talk to the local hospitals and ask. There are areas that have programs for students, where they do an internship in the OR, while still in school. It is a very nice way to transition into the OR. Good luck....:redpinkhe

Yes there are....just look/call around.

Many will say do at least one year of Med/Surg before, but I say many good nurses QUIT nursing because they go into a field they don't like....ie: med/surg, instead of the OR, etc.

It definitely takes a special person to be able to do a Med/Surg position, but if your heart is in the OR, then you are not fully devoted to your patients.
