Opinions on Kent State

Hi, can anyone who attends Kent States Nursing program tell me how they like it. All the pros and cons. I used to attend a regional branch and loved it but it is out of state for me. I go to a West Virginia school now. I am just wondering if I should bite the bullet and go to the out of state school. Most of all I would just like your opinions on Kent's nursing program and how the faculty treat the students.
Hi!!!!!! I'm graduating from Kent State's nursing program one week from tomorrow!!!!!!!!!! :balloons:
The program, as all probably do, has its pro's and cons. The hardest part for me, was fufilling the pre-req's to get in. (A LOT of science classes, and you need to keep the GPA up there).
Once in the program, I LOVED it! I feel they have prepared me very well to be a great RN! At times, it is rough, not all teachers are great....others are awesome!!!!!!!! Some classes are great, others (like community health nursing) aren't so great ........I can get into reasons if you like. The program took me 5 years.
But I would think that there are not so great teachers and classes no matter where you go.....and as long as you make the best of it, and don't give up, you'll make it through successfully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd encourage you to go to Kent!!!! :) But if its more feasable for you to go in state, by all means I'm sure there are plenty of good schools there too!!!!! Best of luck to you! I'll be happy to answer any other specific questions you may have!!!

Yes, I am interested in knowing the specifics of your community nursing class. I also would like some specifics as to what the Hum. Physiology, Human Genetic, and the Chemistry Physiology (if I remember correctly) are like. What kind of material do you cover in these classes? My financial aid just covers the tuition and nothing else. I am going to have to think long and hard if I want to spend that much on school. I already have a lot of debt from student loans. I am sure it is worth it in the long run. Did you take any pre-reqs at a regional branch or did you take everything at main campus? Also, what were the locations of some of your clinicals?

Yes, I took human phys, genetics, pchem....also a class called structure and function. They are all very detailed science classes....and a lot of time/studying is needed. Genetics was interesting.....we also took microbiology...nutrition........hmmm...this is taking me back YEARS! I just remember a few basics from them all.....and I think I took other classes...organic chem is another one.....hmm I can't recall all of them off the top of my head...

I have a Yellow sheet somewhere.............maybe u saw it at one point, with the whole curriculum on it.

I did not like community health nursing because there was a lot of inconsistincies between instructors, and of the clinical experience depending on where you were at. It was also A LOT of paperwork.......a community assessment...very comprehensive.....just TONS OF WORK, and very time consuming. It was not fair if one group had Ravenna to assess, while another had Cleveland or Akron.....but that is IN MY PAST!! :angryfire I made it through, I just did not like it very much.

I have had clinicals at St. Elizabeth in Youngstown, Akron General, Akron Childrens, St. Thomas, University Hospital, and I am currently in Critical Care at the Cleveland Clinic in the Cardio-Thoracic ICU, which I just LOVE!

All of the major hospitals in cleveland have "tuition reembursement". I took advantage of this. They paid 7,500 dollars for a one year work commitment. So that should "help" with the debt...or preventing it from getting bigger towards the end..

I met a girl from a regional campus, and she said she took her first 2 years at a regional site, and then to kent after that. BUT, I know in the senior year, there is "distance learning", and you can watch from a computer from a regional campus. So not 100% at a regional campus, but parts of it yes.

The number of the College of Nursing is 330-672-7930, and Dean Connie Stopper is the person to speak to. I know she also meets with people who are thinking about the program, and she could really tell you a lot. Also, I'm sure they can send you some info, including that curriculum sheet I mentioned above too.

I know I was blabbing every where..........I hope I answered your questions. Feel free to ask about whatever else you think of.

I do think that this program prepared me to be a great, knowledgable, nurse.....

The reason it took me 5 years, is because to start the nursing program year 2...(year one is pre-req's), you need a pretty high science gpa........and mine wasn't so hot, so I retook a couple sciences to get that gpa up.

Science is my toughest subject. Which science pre-reqs did you retake and can I ask what your grade was in them the first time and after you retook them? If you don't want to pubilicly(sp.) display that info. you can email me privately I don't mind. I would only have the science pre-reqs to do and a couple of general classes left to do. I had Connie Stopper as a distance course for Intro. to Nursing about 2 years ago. I thought she was really nice. That's just my opinion though. Thanks for letting me ramble.

They were basically B's and C's to start, but I Failed structure and function the first time I took it :crying2: I even went to every class, at 745am!!!!! It was my first science college class ever, and I don't think I was ready for it. :imbar I re-took it and got a C. BUT, a C in a 5 CH class really brings that science GPA down, the other classes are 3 CH. So I got C's and B's in them....and had to retake a couple..I believe regular chemistry, organic chemistry...and structyre and function (as I said above).

So my second year there I took sciences again, and ALL MY LER'S!!! :) Believe it or not, I was thankful later in the program, when clinical was over my friends were headed to class, and I had time to go off to the gym or work or whatever else I wanted to do!!!
