Opinion Q...Why, do you think more and more Drs are pushing induction?

Published

...my drs are already talking about giving me the option of induction at 38 1/2 weeks if my cervix is ripe. I am only 14 weeks pg!! This will be my 3rd child.I told them I am really not interested, I had a 9 lb baby w/ no probs and I think my body can do it again. My Dr said well, you can, but should you? I guess he was implying something about incontinence. Have this somewhat already, not really worried, I'll just grab a poise and go :rotfl: I was induced w/ my DD and it was so much more painful than natural labor w/ ds. Why are more and more Drs pushing for induction when there are such risks, for moms who are not overdue? I have read the risks and I just don't get it! Just curious as to your, as RNs, opinions...I have made up my mind to let nature take its course, my Drs are fine w/ it, not super pushy, but I can tell they'd be just as happy if I did go for the induction...

My pt today was for Cervidil last night, followed with Pitocin this am. Her due date was today; she was induced because her father lives across the country and was diagnosed with metastatic CA and is dying. She is planning to go to see him (with the baby) the end of this month. Wanted to have delivered and be able to go see him by then. Her doctor had discussed with her that induction significantly increases the risk of a c/s, but it was the pt's choice ultimately. She delivered lady partslly this pm.

I admit I enjoy watching "Dr 90210". One of the surgeons on the show scheduled her C-section, so that she wouldn't inconvenience any of her patients. She plans on returning to work two weeks after she delivers. I thought that was so incredibly sad.

This bothers me too. I work at a hospital where patients are routinely induced at 38 weeks for "social inductions" - it seems I see that with nearly everyone.

I had my first two babies early and unmedicated - 34 and 37 weeks but my third was big and full term. My doctor wouldn't even discuss induction before 41 weeks (without a good reason) and his rule for epidural placement was 4cm/90% effaced or more. I am glad he had these rules because I did fine delivering my nine lb boy the day before his due date with nary a tear. No incontinence problems here.

I think if you had a 9 lb baby already with no problems there is no reason to induce early unless you really want to. In my experience in postpartum thos last few weeks really make a difference as far as early breastfeeding success goes (if you are planning on breastfeeding).

OMG, I saw the same episode. Why on earth is she having a baby? I understand sometimes the best thing for a woman is to go back to work--but when the baby is TWO!!!!!! weeks old? I just feel very, very sorry for that baby. That lady is in for a rude awakening when she finds out that kids don't usually fit into a convenient schedule for their parents! Sorry, but I just found that couple completely selfish.

14 weeks is just too early to be talking about inducing labor.

Not necessarily.
