opinion about nsu shreveport vs panola in carthage...

I am in the process of trying to make my final decision between Panola College and Northwestern State University in Shreveport. Panola has their online/flex option (clinicals at night and on weekend and classes can be taken online) which is great and they do clinicals here in shreveport also, but it is a long way for me to drive if i want to take some classes there. And I have heard that its not as bad to get into clinicals there as it is Northwestern (from an actual advisor at Panola) due to the waiting lists. On the flip side, I have considered Northwestern because it is local, and if i need to speak with an advisor face to face, I can. But I have also had an advisor there tell me getting into clinicals there is VERY competitive. And, i have heard a ton of horror stories about NSU Right now, my over all gpa is 2.9 (but thats including my business classes, as i have recently changed my major). If they just look at the classes that will be applied to the adn progam, it would probably look even better. So if anyone out there has had experience with either one of these or both, please let me know what you think. Thanks!

I posted a few months ago that I was going to try for the online FLEX program at Panola. Well, I decided that I am going to go ahead and apply for this coming Spring 2010 face to face class. I have all pre-reqs and all but 1 nonscience course, so I might as well go ahead and apply. I am trying to locate anyone who has taken Nursing Pharmacology (RSNG 1201)at Panola under Mrs. Risinger. If so, please give me a heads up on what to expect in the class as far as the workload goes. By the way for those of you have been excepted into Panola, my ranking score is a 26.78. Do you think that is a good score to get in the program with? Thanks and good luck to all nurses and future nurse to come!

I am currently enrolled at Panola, and this is my first semester. I must say so far so good. The instructors are awesome! I feel like they know me and all my classmates. I have learned everything will be what you make it. SO if you are determined to be a RN do that and Panola is great and I wll be one of their graduates May 2011.

I am currently enrolled in Pharmacolgy now, the instructor is wonderful! I would take every class she teaches, I understand it is not hard, hope it helps.

I applied for clinicals @ Panola on yesterday and my ranking score turned out to be a 27.3! I hate that it'll be the end of October or the beginning of November before the ranking list comes out to let us know who got in. As we know, good things come to those who wait:wink2:! I will keep u Panola current students informed!

I have heard not so good news from people who have graduated (1 w/bsn & 2 w/bsn). When I went to talk to the advisors there, they weren't as helpful as the nursing staff/falculty at Panola. I am planning on applying for Panola's online program next year. I passed the HESI entrance exam in May. I even had a counselor come to S'port to actually advise me on her off day! What I am trying to say is that I have good vibes about Panola as opposed to NSU. I think that once you go to any college campus and talk to the staff, you can kind of get a feeling of how they are and how you feel about it. I have even met a few nurses who graduated from Panola and said that they loved it. They would recommend it to anyone that's interested. I know for the people in the S'port-Bossier area, they told me that they would try to place you at clinical sites in Longview, Marshall, and S'port. You will have to do a 2-3 day clinical in Rusk, TX (psych ward) though. Also you are doing 1 class every 8 wks. instead of doing multiple classes during a semester and you do not get a break! You go the whole 19mths. straight through where as the face to face program has the summer months off.

I truly need to read this message because I felt the same way... I also attend NSU& Southern in Shreveport and they just place me on a back burner... I really want to start at panola in MARCH 2011 do to Im at Wiley doing a Buisness Management program there at the moment but my goals are to apply for clinicals at panola... I have heard so many great things concerning them but I was concerned about how they would do those who are not from Carthage,TX but your information has truly blessed me alot cause I have all the requirements and grades but I just need that confirm from someone that this is how the program will be and jamalik2 your have done that:)! J. MOORE/ GOOD LUCK AND KEEP ME POSTED ON HOW THINGS GO WITH THE FACE TO FACE CLASSES

I also attended NSU and I didnt start hearing bad things til i left and went to southern @ shreveport... I just felt like it was too competitive...don't get me wrong; I dont want anything handed to me but at least they can give extra time and concern when its needed and I didnt get that at all... plus I have read alot of Blogs and someone stated that when we do recieve a degree from panola... Hospitals will except NSU grad before panola... maybe so but that needs to be stop as well because I feel all of NSU students can still not know everything but be judge just because of the school they attend... what about those who struggle but strive to get what they have....maybe they didnt get a degree at NSU but does that make them non education just because or be judge because of the school they attend... look at NSU now...half of the students that wanted it bader are gone or either stressed out ready to give up... Now there on probation suspension due to their so stressed they cant even pass the test..."WHAT DOES THAT TELL U..."believe me I know because I was one of them... so for the one that did go the NSU and made it GREAT but dont knock those who want a opinion... a person like that is just for self and dont give a "blank" about others problem... why are they even giving there opinion... because its not answering any question only making it seem as if there's no hope for the next... my name is jonifer and I dont disagree with no ones opinion but if its helpful then that shows me that I need to take the time to look into it for self...:)

hmm...I haven't really heard anything about the shreveport/bossier hospitals giving preference to NSU grads....I would really want to speak with the specific hospitals before I factor that into which school I attended!

I will say that my graduating class from panola had no more difficulty getting a job at their hospital of choice than other new grads! I think the main reason there are not as many panola grads at these hospitals is the graduating class size and also many of the students live in texas and aren't even looking in louisiana!

MSCHOCOLATEBARBIE you should look into Panola College. Their entrance exam, compared to the local school"s here in S'port, was very easy. It was on the level of the ACT. Also, the teachers there are very supportive, encouraging, and are willing to work with you every step of the way. I carpool to Carthage once a week for lecture and clinicals are in S'port twice a week. All of that is for level 1! I can say that staff is very mindful of us students from S'port-Bossier in not having us drive to Carthage for every little thing. They are very receptive to LA students with no differences shown.

I agree with quiet_one when she talked about most Panola students live in TX, therefore, they work in TX. About 80% of my class is from TX and the rest from LA. Everybody that I know plan on working in the state that they reside in. Also, it's harder for TX students to get the paperwork done to work in LA (unless they take the NCLEX in LA) as opposed to LA students getting paperwork done to work in TX.

Nursing is challenging but doable:)! Like I stated in my previous posts, their kindness is what made me want to apply to their school. I love it there and wouldn't trade it for anything! If you have any questions, u can email me at [email protected]. Also, according to SUSLA's and NSU's grading scale.... Panola's is the best:D!!!!!! If I can be of any assistance, let me know. Good Luck.

FYI ....A "C"=an "A" in nursing ( u will learn that:lol2:)!!!!!

Please do not take this the wrong way, as I really am not trying to be rude, but you really need to take an english class before you even contemplate nursing school. That being said, nobody said NSU students know everything, if they did, they are foolish. And yes, people should absolutely be judged on the schools they attend. I fully well expect an employer to hire a Biochemist from MIT before one from LSU with all else being the same. Its called competition, the basis of capitalism which until Obama destroys it is still the basis for our economy. Nothing is easy, and nothing is free. Sacrifice and go to Harvard, when you graduate and get a job before anyone else, good for you, you EARNED IT!!!!!!

Bader? Anyway, remember competition is king in nursing school. ONLY the best and brightest get in, and of those, a fraction make it through. I don't care if you go to Southern, Panola or NSU you will be stressed out! If not, you need to seriously consider the legitimacy of the program. NSU is not on probation, that is false. And, the reason most don't pass NCLEX is the result of the student and preparation for the exam, not the institution they attended-anyone who tells you otherwise is simply foolish or biased, again a lot can be said for personal responsibility. Another poster said it best, peoples lives are at stake, not everyone is going to make it through and be a nurse, and not everyone should for that simple reason.

"hmm...I haven't really heard anything about the shreveport/bossier hospitals giving preference to NSU grads"

Look up the NSU/WK partnership program. Regardless of your opinion of WK, they are the leader in healthcare services in this area, and they chose to partner with NSU in hiring nurses, which I believe speaks for itself. These students from NSU are given preference before all others from other schools.

3rd of all as far as NSU being on probation, that is TRUE! Don't know how things have turned around now for them but I wish NSU the best I don't knock any school!

And as far as I'm concern if you see any posting of mines please don't reply...:nono:

*** I don't let any school make me; I make the school... That's what I pay them for***
