Out Dated Dantrolene

I currently have a full loading dose of Dantrolene that has recently out-dated. Does anyone know of an organization or site that would accept out dated medication donations?

I don't know of any and would also like some place to donate it. One thing you might do with it, save some for inservice education and have a mock drill. Have the nurses practice mixing it--it is quite a process and difficult to mix.

I had a patient develop malignant hyperthermia once in a plastic surgery office where I was doing anesthesia. I was trying to hyperventilate the patient and start another iv and asked the RNs to start mixing the dantrolene. They had much difficulty mixing it that we now include it in orientation of new nurses. By the way, the patient survived and had another MH event in a hospital PACU after a spinal for a hernia repair. It appears that narcotics are a triggering agent for her--very rare, but it makes you a believer.

I heard where many of the agencies such as Medicine Sans Frontiers was not accepting out of date medications anymore but I cannot speak for them - best to contact some charities like that. Let us know how you get on please we will be interested and others might benefit too.

I think that Yoga had a good suggestion. It could save a life in the future.

I agree use in in a mock malig. hyperthermia code. We did that recently where I work. It is very interesting to see how difficult it can be to draw up all those vials etc.
