LPN's scrubbing?

Specialties Operating Room

I read in a thread here that LPN's scrub in some OR's. How would someone go about getting the training needed for this position? Do the hospitals offer a preceptor or what? I know that my LPN program had barely a mention of surgical procedure.

Hi, our OR in MI offers a program that trains LPN's to scrub and we have had great success with this. Here the pay is equitable so we had a great response to the posting when the program started. 2 of the best scrub nurses we have are LPN's.

Have a great day!

I am an lpn that scrubs. I find it hard to believe that any RN has received adaqaute training in surgical techniques and surgical instruments either. You must be trained.

In my state, most of the LPNs who scrub are older, from the days before scrub techs were widely used. I haven't seen any "new" LPNs in any of the ORs I've worked in..

Yup, that why the orientation for OR nurses can be up to a year in many instances...I was a surgical tech before I became an RN, so I already knew how to scrub.

I was hired into a perioperative training program at a teaching hospital straight out of LPN school. Our hospital teaches LPN's to scrub and circulate, usually providing breaks to circulating RNs. It was 6 months of classroom and precepted training before we were "turned loose". My hospital is the only one in our area that does this but I haven't researched to see how many others in TN have this program. We also have a training program for RN circulators.
