How does your OR assign call for coverage ? Is it done equitably? Any suggestions or feedback is welcomed.

If you think the way they do yours, please tell me how.... I'm looking for suggestions please

Ours is broken down into 8 hour blocks. Expectation is that everyone signs up for 1 block per week with weekend blocks being assigned. Once the allotted time is up to sign up for call, any remaining blocks are assigned. Those who didn't sign up for any call are assigned first; then if there are still blocks that need to be filled, it goes by those who have the least. If everyone is about even, then it is assigned based on a rotating list.

Thank you so much for your response. I have a question, how does everyone sign up for that 8 hour block? is a sheet put out and everyone selects their time spot? What about people who are not at work when the sheet comes out? or left for the day ? Is there a mad rush to the signup sheet to get spots, then everyone who is not there gets leftovers?

Sorry about the thousands of questions..... Thanks again for responding

We have recently started using the website Sign Up Genius. It works great on my end (coordinating the call) but some people do not like it because it is a change from the paper version. However, everyone has an equal opportunity even if they are at home or on vacation or at work.

You basically create the time slots for the month or however long your call calendar is for and then you "invite" everyone via email and they have a username that they then sign up for their slots. Call goes like crazy now!! People are in their phones signing up the instant the email goes out.

I highly reccommend.

Recently we started using a staff meeting to pick numbers, then pick call for six weeks taking turns - going in ascending numerical order the first round, descending numerical order the second round, and the last round either ascending or a new pick of numbers. We use a large poster-board paper so that everyone can see the dates picked as they are picked, so all can plan and be ready for their turn to pick. This is done for weeknight call only, both trauma and regular call. Seems to work well, takes less time than one person trying to schedule everyone.
