Hey gang thought I would post here too....I am wondering if any Canadians from Ontario Travel, what do you do with your OHIP (mine was canceled when I went on contract for a year in Tx. I had to reapply and its ok now) OHIP told me I had to be in Canada for 5 consecutive months per year or they would take it again...Also what is the best way to file your income taxes do you file in the US and in Canada...Would appreciate any help
Thanks gang

Irene,
I think your out of luck as far as OHIP is concerned. The 5 month rule is one of the reasons 'snowbirds' only go south for a few months.
As far as taxes, having worked in both countries, I know you will have to file in both countries and declare how much tax you paid the other. The US and Canada have tax agreements. If you go back and forth frequently it may be beneficial to hire a tax expert who deals with people such as yourself who cross the border to work. You can usually find someone like that in border towns such as Windsor or Niagara Falls.
Aren't taxes fun??
Thank for the reply I have the Tax thing undercontrol. However I have learned that as long as I can provide OHIP a letter including start and end dates I may apply for an exteneded absence past the 5 months. I may also continue to do this for a max of 5 yrs. Once the 5 yrs is up a I have to remain in Ontario for 2 yrs straight. Also if at anytime my OHIP lapes due to expending a contract without provided contract. I will have a three month waiting period before my OHIP is activated. So all and all its a pain....but its the price we pay...LOL

Did you ask exactly what OHIP would cover? I'm just curious because I was told they don't cover all fees.
Fergus,
I think she is concerned about OHIP coverage when she is in Ontario between assignments in the US. Hopefully if you are travelling in the US you have US health insurance. Am I right Irene?
Totally...I am refering to when I am in Ontario between assignments. I am going to make sure I have immediate insureance through the company I travel with...
Thanks for the the help gang...
Gotcha! I was thinking maybe I got ripped off when I bought insurance to cover me down here until my work insurance came through:)
Furgie,
Ohip will cover some medical exps while you are in the US but only up to 1000.00 and you have to file with them for a repayment with in a year of the original exp. You should contact them first to clariy what is and isnt covered. Lets be honest...1000 isnt gonna cover much:uhoh3: . Its was still in your best interest to get the extra insurance....its never a waste..
take care:coollook:

That's what I was told. I moved down here for the second time about 2 years ago and got my own insurance because $1000 is nothing. I went to a walk in clinic in January and my bill there alone was over $250.
