Ontario Second-Entry Nursing (2015)

I know it's early, but let's get a thread going. 2015-hopefuls, share your thoughts, concerns, questions, and experiences here!

Hey guys,

So I applied last year and unfortunately didn't make it into either program so I thought I would try my luck again this year. I have been following the thread for awhile this year and am reminded about how stressful this time of year is. Best of luck to everyone.

My York application also says no decision yet. I'm wondering if the only acceptances they've sent to date have been to those who have completed all the pre-reqs already or if anyone has received a conditional offer (and is in the process of completing some of the pre-req courses)?

hi everyone! Today I got an e-mail from Western saying I got denied because I do not have the requirements. But I've quadruple checked and I definitely do have the prerequisites. However, I am currently in the progress of completing my anatomy and phys prereqs. Anyone have this happen to them? Just wondering if I should call them and see if they made a mistake?

Just to make sure, did you fill out the pre-req form on the uwo student center when you applied? Perhaps that may be the issue? If you did though, then I would call tomorrow just to make sure you don't lose the opportunity because of a mistake! :)

Yah I filled out the prerequisite form in January! I'll have to call in the AM and make sure. Thanks for replying :)

yeah definitely call them - one of my pre-reqs is ongoing right now and I was accepted two months ago @ Western.

Also was accepted to York.. waiting on Mac.

Q1: I was wondering if anyone went to that Accelerated Nursing event York had in October/November?? What did you learn?

I need to decide whether to pick Western or York right now, and I have to do some research yet, but:

Q2: I was wondering other's thoughts on York vs. Western.

They are both an 1.5h drive from where I live, and I feel like going to Western could be better for getting more desirable placements since there is so many TO hospitals pooled with so many students in the area that I've heard this was an issue in the past (maybe my logic is totally wrong here). I *REALLY* want to get a job in Waterloo once I graduate, and I know that the preceptorship placements tend to lead to jobs, especially with the New Grad Initiative - hence why I am dying to go to Mac. Each school's placement agency has a set pool of hospitals defined by their geographical proximity to the school. Trying to get placed at a hospital not within out agency's pool is pretty much impossible I was told.. I was even told contacting the hospital yourself is "academically illegal" and "goes on your record"... from the wonderful meeting I had with a person from the Trent nursing program last year.

I called and got it sorted out :) thanks!

Also, has anyone been given a conditional offer to York? I'm just trying to figure out if it's more likely that we'll be given a conditional offer or if they'll just wait until April once our final grades are all in. Thanks!

On your last point, you absolutely cannot set up your own placements. I'm pretty sure most if not all nursing schools in Ontario have their placements arranged by the Health Science Placement Network (HSPNet). It is a very organized process.

Waterloo is not in York's placement area. The only way you could get a placement in Waterloo for your final practicum (only for that one) at York is if you maintain a B+ average overall with at least a B+ in each of your clinical courses, but even then it's not guaranteed York can secure you that placement.

Where are you planning to live when you start school? I can tell you at York classes almost always start at 8:30 AM and for clinical you usually have to be on the floor at 7 AM. Also, generally where you get placed within the placement area depends on where you live.

I don't know what Western's placement area is so I can't comment on that.

It is still VERY early for York acceptances. I'm confident only a small portion of seats have been filled at this point. A lot of acceptances are given through April-May, and for internal applicants they don't even begin sending out acceptances until late May. The wait list usually starts in June. We had acceptances from the wait list up until September.

Hey guys! Are any of you U of T students applying to York? If so, have you looked at the course equivalency list for pre-reqs?

Hey ak11rs! I can't speak to Western but the same thing happened to me at McMaster a couple of weeks ago. I got an email saying I couldn't be considered because I was missing an introductory psychology credit, although I had 1 first year credit and 4 credits above first year. I called the admissions advisor and they reviewed the course outlines from my credits and accepted one of them. I know that it is not quite the same as anatomy and physiology, but I would recommend calling the admissions advisor! They may be able to give you a better idea of what specific prereq or why it wasn't accepted. Hope that helps!

oh nevermind, looks like you figured it out! :)
